A favorite in Class 5A has been vanquished.

The 15th-seed East St. John saw to that, upsetting second-seeded Ponchatoula in convincing fashion, winning 58-38 Monday night in the regional round of the girls state playoffs.

The Lady Wildcats left no doubt with a dominant second half performance.

The Lady Wave took a 13-10 lead after one quarter and held a 27-26 lead at halftime. East St. John then took over, outscoring Ponchatoula 32-11 in the second half, including 11-1 in the third quarter and 21-10 in the final quarter.

Senior Ja’Keyra Gauthreaux led the Lady Wildcats (28-7) with 18 points, Taylor Lipps had 14 while Kayja Jackson and Meah Monroe each had 11 points. Jazmyn Womack topped Ponchatoula (30-4) with 12 points while Allie Amerson had nine.

East St. John will travel to seventh-seed Natchitoches Central in the quarterfinals. The Lady Chiefs won at 23rd-seed Hammond 67-53.

There will be a new state champion in Class 4A this year.

The 11th-seed Salmen saw to that, upsetting sixth-seed Ellender 76-69 at Houma Monday night.

It was sweet revenge for the Spartans, who lost to Ellender 65-49 in the state championship game a year ago.

The Spartans started quickly, jumping on the Lady Patriots to take a 23-9 lead after one quarter before leading 38-31 at halftime. It was 56-50 after three quarters.

Junior Ashanti Eden was the star for Salmen, scoring 30 points. Jaylen Huderson scored 18 points while Allite Batiste added 14 for the Spartans (22-7). Terris McKay led Ellender (22-7) with 21 points, Marsan Frierson had 15, Oreian James had 15 and Tanisha Hester had 11 points for the Lady Patriots.

Salmen advances to the quarterfinals to host third-seed Neville. The Tigers handled 14th-seed Leesville 64-44.

Also in 4A, fourth-seed Warren Easton easily handled district rival and 13th-seed Helen Cox 65-37 at McDonogh 35. The Lady Eagles led 12-4 after one quarter and 30-16 at halftime. It was 43-25 after three quarters.

Briera Encalade led the Lady Cougars (21-13) with 12 points while Mya Phillips had nine. It was a similar result to the district matchup between the two teams when the Lady Eagles won 60-35 on Jan. 12.

Warren Easton advances to host fifth-seed Bossier in the quarterfinals. Bossier downed 12th-seed South Terrebonne 34-28.

In Division II, third-seed Ursuline served notice that it is a serious contender once again with a 55-23 win over 14th-seed St. Michael.

The Lions took command immediately, leading 18-3 after one quarter and 35-12 by halftime. It was 51-13 after three quarters.

Giordin Johnson led a balanced attack with 14 points, Kennedi Jackson had 13 and Kourtney Weber tallied 11 for Ursuline (23-4). Caitie Brumfield topped the Lady Warriors (10-19) with eight points.

Ursuline advances to the quarterfinals to host eighth-seed St. Louis Catholic Thursday. The Saints advanced with a 77-64 win over 11th-seed Parkview Baptist.

In Division III, top-seed and defending state champion Northlake Christian cruised past 16th-seeded Newman 61-18.

The Wolverines jumped all over the Greenies, taking a 28-0 lead at the outset and coasted to the win. Kyren Whittington topped the Wolverines (24-1) with 16 points while Natalie Newberry had 14. Soshanna Cohen led the Greenies (10-13) with nine points.

Northlake Christian has now won 18 straight games. The Wolverines will host eighth-seed St. Mary’s of Natchitoches in the quarterfinals. St. Mary’s downed ninth-seed the Church Academy 42-18.

Also in Division III, sixth-seed St. Katharine Drexel handled 11th-seeded Country Day 52-38 at McMain High School.
St. Katharine Drexel started the game on an 11-0 and never looked back.

Tyra Vaughn led the Jackets (18-8) with 20 points, Genise Wells had 14 and Tyrione Sparks had eight points. Kaci Chairs did her best to keep the Lady Cajuns (7-12) in the game, pumping in 30 of her team’s 38 points.

The Jackets will travel to third-seed Dunham in the quarterfinals. The Tigers downed 14th-seeded Calvary Baptist 45-22.
In Class B, top-seed Holden rolled over 16th-seeded Converse 77-36.

The Rockets dominated from the start, taking a 19-2 lead after one quarter and a 47-7 lead at halftime.

Jaycee Hughes led Holden (33-1) with 24 points, Amanda Fekete had 15 and KiKi Kropog had 11 points. Abby Rivers topped Converse (12-20) with 16 points.
