Bowling

After making back-to-back trips to the state championship match in 2009-10, it took Archbishop Shaw more than a decade to return to the state semifinals, where it lost to Catholic High two years ago.

The next trip back didn’t take nearly as long.

The top-seeded Eagles easily dispatched of St. Thomas More and E.D. White Monday at All Star Lanes in Baton Rouge to reach the semis of the first-ever Division II boys/co-ed state championship.

Shaw (14-0) will face West Bank rival Patrick Taylor (11-1) in one semifinal matchup next Thursday at Premier Lanes in Gonzales. The Tigers, whose only regular-season loss was a 19-8 decision to Shaw on March 7 at Westside Lanes, are in the semifinals for the first time after defeating French Settlement and St. Michael the Archangel Monday.

The other semifinal will match No. 11 seed Albany (11-3), which knocked off a pair of higher-seeded teams from the Lafayette area, and second-seeded South Terrebonne (14-0), the division’s only other unbeaten team, which posted wins over Ellender and Belle Chasse.

In Shaw’s 24-3 opening-round victory over St. Thomas More, the Eagles got games of 235 and 214 from Brady Barrilleaux and 211 and 220 from Jonathan Arena.

The Eagles turned in a 1,331 middle game and 3,544 team series in defeating No. 8 seed E.D. White 23-4 in the second round. Arena had a 763 series on games of 257-227-279 to lead Shaw, while Zachary Tran had a 279 middle game as part of a 639 set and Joshua Collins punctuated the game two effort with a 277.

Patrick Taylor, the No. 4 seed in the bracket, swept the first two games in a 26-1 opening-round victory over French Settlement. The Tigers had an 1,166 middle game that included a 234 from Jadon Lieu and a 226 from Beckham Lieu.

In a 21-6 victory over fifth-seeded St. Michael the Archangel, Patrick Taylor won six of eight points in each game and took seven of the nine matches on the low pair. Jayden Ho had games of 202 and 203 and Beckham Lieu a 212 for the Tigers.

Belle Chasse, making its first playoff appearance, took a 20-7 first-round victory over University Lab. Bryce Shepherd’s 258 final game capped a 640 series to lead the Cardinals.

South Terrebonne ended Belle Chasse’s season with a 22-5 second-round victory. Shepherd had a team-best 608 series, including games of 211 and 215, while Matthew St. Germain opened with a 234 and had a 600 set.

The Gators got a big performance Monday from Aiden Jones, who had a 736 series on games of 246-258-232 in the opening round, then backed it up with a 671 series in the win over Belle Chasse.

Albany rolled to a 20-7 victory over No. 6 seed Teurlings Catholic in the opening round and then rolled past third-seeded David Thibodaux 26-1 in the second round. Carson Campise had a 602 series in the second-round victory.

Playoff action continues Tuesday with the early rounds of boys/co-ed Division I at Colonial Lanes in Harahan, with five area teams in action – Jesuit, Brother Martin, Archbishop Rummel, Holy Cross and Slidell. The first matches begin at 9:30 a.m.
