John Curtis, Brother Martin, Riverside advance; Rummel, Jesuit, Shaw, Hannan, SCC with wins Friday (Ken T.)

John Curtis Christian is back in the LHSAA baseball state quarterfinals.

The second-seeded Patriots fought off No. 15 seed and District 9-5A rival St. Augustine 8-5 Friday to complete a two-game series sweep in the regional playoff round.

Things did not start well for the Patriots as St. Augustine bolted to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a grand slam by Yerdin Castillo.

Remaining poised, John Curtis responded with three runs to the bottom of the second inning to cut the deficit to 4-3 before taking the lead for good at 5-4 with a pair of runs in the third inning. Curtis added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to lead 8-4 before the Purple Knights scored a run in the seventh inning.

Juan Washington went five innings, allowing four runs on just two hits to pick up the win. Washington walked six and struck out five.

Tyler Mitchell was the star at the plate for the Patriots going 4-for-4 with three RBI. Washington drove in two runs. Brad Chaisson and Conner Micheu each had two hits and an RBI.

The Patriots took advantage of 10 walks and a hit batter issued by St. Augustine pitching.

John Curtis (28-6) advances to the quarterfinals to face yet another rematch with a District 9-5A rival, hosting No. 7 Brother Martin next weekend.

The Crusaders downed No. 10 Tioga 8-2 in nine innings Friday night in a game streamed live on CrescentCitySports.com.

Replay: Brother Martin erupts in ninth inning to eliminate Tioga

John Curtis and Brother Martin split a pair of district games during the regular season.

Ignore the record of Riverside Academy.

Marty Luquet’s young Rebels played a very tough schedule and it has made his team very tough.

That was evident Friday as No. 20 Riverside went on the road and upset No. 4 Vermilion Catholic 3-2 to advance to the Select Division IV quarterfinals in the single elimination format.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning, Riverside staged the two-run, game-winning rally.

Jayce Ruiz pitched a complete game four-hitter for the big win. Ruiz struck out nine and drove in the tying run in the sixth inning. Brock Bourgeois produced the game-winning run on a bases loaded walk. Staked to the lead, Ruiz retired the final six batters in succession to nail down the big victory.

Riverside (7-18-1) advances to play No. 5 Central Catholic in the quarterfinals. Central Catholic handled No. 12 Delhi Charter 9-0.

In Select Division I, No. 3 seed Archbishop Rummel held off No. 14 Carencro 5-4 in game one of a best-of-three series at Mike Miley Stadium.

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Raiders scored a run to take a 2-1 lead before scoring three runs in the fifth to lead 5-1. The Bears rallied with three runs in the seventh inning and had two men on base but Brian Keller got the final out to allow the Raiders to escape with the win.

Tulane commit Evan Burg had a two-run single while Aiden Gernard had two hits and an RBI for Rummel. Gavin Kennedy and Lenny Cline each drove in a run and Louisiana Tech commit Gavin Nix added two hits to an eight-hit attack.

Tulane signee Giancarlo Arencibia picked up the win, going six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on just two hits. Arencibia reached his pitch limit in the seventh inning after walking the bases loaded and Keller came on to get the final three outs.

Chantz Babineaux, Luke Roger and Hunter Richard each had an RBI for Carencro. Richard took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits. Richard walked one and struck out two.

Game two is Saturday at noon with game three, if necessary, to follow.

Defending state champion and No. 9 Jesuit got the jump on No. 8 St. Paul’s, defeating the Wolves 4-1 in game one of the best-of-three series at Heap Field.

Jesuit took a 1-0 lead with a run in the second inning before the Blue Jays put up three runs in the top of the third inning which proved decisive.

Senior Everett Denny was outstanding, going the distance, allowing a run on seven hits to pick up the win. Denny walked five and struck out three. Denny added a triple and scored a run at the plate.

Michael Brothers had two hits, including a triple with an RBI while Patrick Berrigan also tripled in a run for Jesuit.

John Montour took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits. Montour walked three and struck out three. Montour had a hit and drove in the lone run for the Wolves (15-14) in the fourth inning. Air Force signee Cooper Winchester and Brody Bouterie each had a pair of hits for St. Paul’s.

Jesuit (21-11) goes for the series win Saturday at 1 p.m. in game two. If the Wolves win, game three would follow immediately.
