Baseball: John Curtis, Brother Martin, Jesuit, Kenner Discovery tune up for playoffs with wins

Area Prep Baseball Report for Tuesday, April 16

John Curtis tuned up for the Select Division I playoffs with a 9-1 win Monday over Centerville.

The Patriots scored a run in the first inning and led 4-1 after three innings. Curtis played add-on with a run in the bottom of the fourth and two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. Nate Alario and Brad Chaisson each had two hits and an RBI, Aiden Karr had a double and an RBI while Xavier Brown, Bryce Hebert, Conner Micheu and Tyler Mitchell all had an RBI.

Kolston Martinez picked up the win, going three innings, allowing one run on one hit. He walked three and struck out five. Karr pitched three scoreless innings and Gabe Lagarde added a shutout frame.

John Curtis (23-6) is expected to be the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.

Brother Martin tuned up for the playoffs as well with a 3-0 win over Destrehan at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

Cole Navarro pitched a complete game shutout, allowing five hits with one walk and struck out 11. The Crusaders played error-free baseball defensively. Frank Randol had a hit and an RBI while Stan Wiltz had a sacrifice bunt, producing another run.

Brother Martin (19-10) is likely to be the seventh seed in the Division I playoffs.

Destrehan (18-13) should be the 21st seed in the Non-Select Division I playoffs.

Defending Select Division I state champion Jesuit also tuned up for the playoffs, bouncing Archbishop Shaw 13-0 at Winterscheidt Field in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

The Blue Jays established control immediately as Everett Denny led off the game with a home run to right field and it was 1-0 after one inning. Jesuit made it 5-0 with four runs in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Brandon Thomas, a 2-run single by Denny and a sacrifice fly from Marshal Serio.

Jesuit broke it open with six runs in the third inning. Thomas and Denny each had an RBI when hit by pitches with the bases loaded and it was 7-0. Derek Delatte doubled home two runs to make it 9-0 and Serio singled home two more runs to make it 11-0.

The Blue Jays added a run in the fourth inning on a bases loaded walk to Delatte and finished the scoring on a double play ball, scoring Ryan Saunders, who was hit by a pitch.

Jake Moreci went three shutout innings with three strikeouts to get the win. Jackson Dugan relieved him and kept Shaw scoreless.

Hayden Percle had the only hit, a single for the Eagles. Chase Baiamonte took the loss.

Jesuit (20-11) is expected to be the ninth seed in the Select Division I playoffs.

Shaw (13-17) should be the 11th seed in the Select Division II playoffs.

Kenner Discovery edged St. Martin’s Episcopal 8-7.

In a back-and-forth game, St. Martin’s led 1-0 before the Swamp Owls took a 2-1 lead after two innings. It was tied 3-3 after three innings and 5-5 after five innings. The Saints scored two runs in the top of the sixth before Kenner Discovery won it with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Julian Caronna had two hits and three RBI while Noah Fulton had two hits and an RBI. Brayden Netterville had a triple and two RBI. Caronna picked up the win, going four innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Kenner Discovery (14-16) will be the 14th seed in the Select Division II playoffs while the Saints (14-18) will be in the 14-16 range in the Select Division IV seeds.
