Westminster (Fla.) moves past Math, Civics and Sciences into Sugar Bowl boys platinum semifinals

WESTWEGO – Westminster Academy took a 12-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and held off a Math, Civics and Sciences High School comeback to take a 62-50 victory in the quarterfinals of the Boys Platinum Bracket of the 11th Annual Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic on Friday night at the Alario Center.

The Lions of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (9-4) will face Newton (Ga.), which defeated St. Mary’s (Ariz.), in a semifinal game at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Alex Lloyd led Westminster with 22 points, Jaylen Carey scored 17 and Gustavo Alves Guimares added 10. Aasim Burton scored 12 points and Chauncey Presley added 11 to lead the Mighty Elephants of Philadelphia.

The Lions led 25-14 at halftime, but MCS pulled within 31-30 late in the third quarter. Westminster scored the final six points to take a 37-30 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The lead grew to 10 points at the start of the fourth quarter and the closest the Mighty Elephants could get the rest of the way was seven points on two occasions.
