On the field, Warren Easton lost to Karr and Catholic of Baton Rouge during the regular season, both Select Division I playoff teams.

Still, the Eagles earned the top seed in the playoffs in the division, based on playing a very challenging schedule and on receiving a forfeit win over Karr.

The Eagles are a definite contender and served notice Friday night, serving notice with a convincing 48-7 win over No. 17 Captain Shreve at Pan American Stadium.

Quarterback Keddrick Connelly ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third score.

Fred Robertson scored on a 4-yard run to put Easton up 7-0 before Connelly scored on 15-yard run to give the Eagles a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Connelly added a 5-yard touchdown in the second quarter to make it 21-0 before Easton scored on special teams as Archie Chambers blocked a field goal and Greg Donaldson returned it 60 yards for a touchdown and it was 28-0. Donaldson added an interception in an outstanding performance.

In the third quarter, Connelly hit Kyon Holiday on a 38-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-0.

Kenyon Terrell Hit Jordan Wiggins on a 35-yard touchdown pass to provide the only score of the game for Captain Shreve (6-6) and it was 35-7.

Robertson then raced 60 yards for a touchdown to make it 42-7 and Terrell Surtain completed the scoring with a 7-yard run for the Eagles.

Connelly accounted for three scores while Robertson rushed for 167 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns.

On the Three Tailgaters Show on NASH ICON 106.1 FM Saturday morning, Easton head coach Jerry Phillips said it was a complete effort by his team.

“The bye worked out well,” Phillips said. “I was nervous. For some reason, we always start off slow but from the first kickoff, we were ready to play and we played well in all three phases of the game. I was really pleased. It’s coming together at the right time.”

Phillips had special praise for Robertson.

“Fred has deceptive speed and he has gotten better with his vision,” Phillips said. “He’s been special for us. I’m going to keep feeding him the ball. Everyone is crowding the line of scrimmage now, trying to stop him. He’s just been phenomenal. He’s a great kid and a great team leader. I’m glad we have him for another year.”

Warren Easton (10-1) advances to host No. 8 Carencro in the quarterfinals next Friday night at Pan American Stadium. The Bears avenged an earlier season district loss to No. 9 Acadiana, winning 27-17.

The Bears bring their vaunted veer attack to New Orleans off a state championship most recently in 2020.

“I love facing an old-school approach that Carencro brings but it is hard to practice and prepare for it in just one week,” Phillips said. “Our defensive line has to get push and our linebackers have to fill. They will try to slow the game down and shorten that. Our offense has to take advantage of its possessions. We have to score often and quick. We have to get them in third-and-long situations.”

The Eagles will be tough to beat in New Orleans.

“We will have really good fan support,” Phillips said.
