Volleyball Playoffs: Northlake Christian, PJP, Haynes, JC, STA, St. Martin’s, McGehee advance with first round wins

Of the 17 matches played Tuesday, every higher seed was victorious and none lost a set as the LHSAA state volleyball playoffs opened.

Among area teams, No. 30 Lusher fell at third-seed E.D. White Catholic 25-5, 25-14, 25-10 in a Division II first-round matchup.

Lila Bordis led the Cardinals (25-11) with nine kills and 11 digs and three aces. The Lions end their season 3-23.

In Division IV, fifth-seed Northlake Christian dismissed No. 28 KIPP Renaissance 25-9, 25-10, 25-3. The Wolverines (23-6) advance to face the winner of today’s matchup pitting No. 21 Delcambre at No. 12 Episcopal.

Fourth-seed and four-time defending state champion Pope John Paul II opened with a convincing 25-13, 25-4, 25-13 win atg home against No. 29 Donaldsonville. Morgan Faciane had 12 kills while Mallory Norton produced 11 kills for the Jaguars (20-10). Pope John Paul II advances to take on the winner of the first-round match pitting No. 20 Patrick Taylor at No. 13 St. Charles Catholic.

No. 11 Haynes advanced with a 25-15-25-8, 25-15 win over Pine. The Yellow Jackets (17-11) move on to take on to face the winner of No. 27 North Caddo and No. 6 Many.

No. 7 John Curtis Christian took care of No. 26 Franklin 25-4, 25-6, 25-11. The Patriots (22-13) move on to take on the winner of No. 10 Catholic of New Iberia and No. 23 Calvary Baptist in the regional round.

No. 15 St. Thomas Aquinas swept No. 18 Patterson 25-19, 25-7-25, 25-19 at Hammond. The Falcons (20-14) move on to face the winner of No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 31 Martin Luther King Charter in the regional round.

In Division V, No. 8 St. Martin’s Episcopal handled No. 25 West St. John 25-15, 25-15, 25-8. The Saints (22-14) advance to host No. 9 Academy of the Sacred Heart of Grand Coteau, who downed No. 24 Ascension Christian 25-11, 25-14, 25-19. The regional match is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Metairie.

Third-seed Central Catholic defeated No. 30 Christ Episcopal 25-6, 25-6, 25-12 to move on to the regional round. Christ Episcopal finished 8-19. Central Catholic will face the winner of No. 19 St. Katharine Drexel at No. 14 Crescent City in the regional round.

No. 7 McGehee dismissed the new kid on the block, No. 26 Kenner Discovery by a 25-2, 25-5, 25-11 margin. It was the first year competing for LHSAA honors for the Owls. McGehee advances to take on the winner of No. 10 St. John and No. 23 Hamilton Christian in the regional round.
