Volleyball: Hannan wins rubber match with MCA; SSA, Ponchatoula win

Area Prep Volleyball Report for Wednesday, Oct. 5

In a rubber match of Louisiana volleyball powers, two-time defending Division III state champion Archbishop Hannan gained the edge on Division I power Mount Carmel Academy, defeating the Cubs in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 26-24 Tuesday at Hannan.

The Hawks and Cubs had split a pair of previous matches.

Sophia Bonnaffee was a force for the Hawks with 19 kills, seven digs and two assists, Carleigh Breaux had eight kills and 10 digs and Sydney Grembowicz finished with seven kills, four blocks and an assist. Sarah Kirsch finished with 35 assists.

The Hawks (14-8), fourth in the Division III power ratings, return to action Thursday, hosting Bogalusa in a District 7-III matchup at 5:30 p.m.

The Cubs (25-4), second in the Division I power ratings, saw their seven-match win streak end and will head to Destrehan for a 5:30 match this evening.

St. Scholastica handled Salmen 25-4, 25-8, 25-17 in the District 5-II opener for both teams in Covington.

The win snapped a two-match losing streak for the Doves.

Senior Maren Davis had eight kills while sophomore Julia Whitfield added six kills and a block. Junior Lauren Gazeley had five kills, four digs and served two aces.

Senior Isabella Rodrigue had nine assists and four aces, junior Emily Devlin had nine assists and sophomore Olivia Palmer finished with eight assists. Junior Laurel Bobrowski added six digs, four kills and an ace.

St. Scholastica (11-9), sixth in the Division II power ratings, returns to district play today, hosting Franklinton at 5:30 p.m.

The Spartans (7-7) host Covington today at 4:30 p.m. in a non-district contest.

Ponchatoula stayed hot, beating rival Hammond 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 at home for its fifth straight win.

Emma Hoover had seven kills, four digs, three blocks and an ace while Hailey Hewitt had six kills, five digs and an ace. Cristina Curtis had 25 assists and six digs, Brilynn Singh had 18 digs, three aces and an assist and Ryleigh Castello had two kills and 15 digs. Castello now has 325 kills on the season.

The Green Wave (15-5) return to action in a District 5-I contest Thursday at Fontainebleau at 5:30 p.m. while the Tornadoes (10-12) have dropped eight straight matches and will play a District 5-I match today at 5:45 p.m. at Mandeville.
