Volleyball: Belle Chasse rallies past Destrehan, Chalmette downs Mandeville, AOL sweeps Crescent City

Area Prep Volleyball Report for Thursday, September 29

Three teams who are highly ranked in the new LHSAA prep volleyball power ratings all posted wins Wednesday.

One came easily while the other two were dogfights.

It looked very bleak for Belle Chasse at Destrehan. Ranked fifth in the new LHSAA Division II power ratings, the host Wildcats jumped on the Cardinals by winning the first two sets.

Then the change came.

Belle Chasse staged a furious rally, taking the final three sets to take the match 20-25, 23-25, 25-13, 25-11, 25-5.

Jerne Colin had seven kills, eight aces and 26 assists, Nya St. Cyr finished with 12 kills, 14 blocks and an ace and Cacie Petrovich had 11 digs to lead the way for the Cardinals.

Belle Chasse (16-2) won its first 15 matches of the season before dropping two straight. The Cardinals will play Monday at Patrick Taylor.

Destrehan (4-12) dropped its sixth straight match. The Wildcats will host St. Charles Catholic at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Ranked third in the new LHSAA Division I power ratings, Chalmette continued its outstanding season with a home win over Mandeville 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 19-25, 15-8 in a match of runs for both teams.

Bryla Major led the way with 21 kills and six blocks while Krislenn Lucas had 14 kills and four blocks. Gabrielle Landry had eight kills and an ace and JoDee McMichael had six kills, two blocks and one ace.

Chalmette (18-4) has won five straight matches and faces a tough road test at powerful Newman Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Academy of the Sacred Heart easily handled Crescent City Christian 25-13, 25-6, 25-13.

Ranked second in the new Division IV power ratings, Sacred Heart (17-4) will next travel to Ben Franklin at 5:30 p.m. Monday while the Pioneers (5-9) will play at Lutheran next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
