It was worth the wait for Varnado.

The Wildcats opened District 9-1A play with a hard fought 22-20 win over West St. John in Edgard on Monday night.

In a game was pushed back from last Friday night, when it was originally scheduled to be played, due to lights at the stadium in Edgard not working.

Tyriq Bell rushed 21 times for 135 yards and completed 2-of-7 passes for 33 yards and a touchdown for Varnado. Chase Lewis rushed 14 times for 46 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 33 yards and a touchdown offensively while adding an interception returned for a score defensively. Chad Ladner added eight carries for 42 yards.

Will Hardge also had an interception for the Wildcats.

“It was nice to open up district play with a win,” Varnado coach Adam Brumfield said. “I believe this is the first time Varnado has beaten West St. John in school history. Chase Lewis had a great game, scoring on both sides of the ball.”

Both schools have a short week before returning to action Friday night.

Varnado (1-5, 1-0) will host Cohen while the Rams (1-5, 0-1) travel to Riverside Academy.

“It’s time to get back to the grind, back to work to get ready for Cohen,” Brumfield said.
