Breakers fall to Generals, 27-17

The New Jersey Generals controlled the line of scrimmage with a punishing rushing attack and picked off a pair of passes in a 27-17 victory Saturday over the New Orleans Breakers at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.

New Jersey rushed for 188 yards and three scores and came up with a pair of key interceptions of New Orleans quarterback Kyle Sloter.

The Breakers took the early lead on a 42-yard field goal by Taylor Bertelot, set up by a 43-yard run by Jerod Fernandez on a fake punt.

DeAndre Johnson capped a solid drive with a touchdown run to give the Generals a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter.

Johnson it again, rushing for a second score early in the second quarter to make it 14-3.

New Orleans rallied, first scoring on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Sloter to Jonathan Adams to make it 14-10.

New Jersey got a field goal prior to halftime to take a 17-10 lead at the break.

New Orleans pulled even in the third quarter on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Sloter to Johnnie Dixon to make it 17-17 but the Generals responded with a scoring drive, capped off by a touchdown run by Darius Victor and it was 24-17.

Then, the two teams experienced a 30-minute lightning delay in the third quarter.

Austin Jones added a 31-yard field goal late to account for the final margin.

Victor finished with 17 carries for 95 yards and a score while Johnson finished 14 of 21 for 213 yards and an interception. KeVontae Turpin had five catches for 106 yards for New Jersey.

Sloter struggled, completing just 15 of 36 passes for 155 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Ellis led the Breakers in rushing with 14 carries for 42 yards. Adams finished with four catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.

Adonis Alexander had an interception for New Orleans while Fernandez finished with 11 tackles.

New Jersey (4-1) has won three straight games.

The Breakers (3-2) will return to action next Sunday against the Pittsburgh Maulers.
