UNO’s Corcoran, Pokorna named Southland Beach Volleyball Pair of the Week

Duo went 3-1 at FIU Invitational

FRISCO, Texas – New Orleans’ Veronica Cororan and Lucie Pokorna are the Southland Conference Beach Volleyball Pair of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.

The twosome went 3-1 at the FIU Invitational in South Beach, helping the Privateers to the same mark over the weekend. After dropping a Friday morning matchup with No. 14 FIU 5-0, UNO won three-straight matches over San Diego City College (3-0), Missouri State (3-2) and Florida Memorial (5-0) to close out the weekend slate.

The Privateers (5-1) are set to host the New Orleans Invitational on Friday and Saturday, beginning with a 9 a.m. CT first serve against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday. UNO will face conference foes Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Nicholls at 3 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday, respectively, and close out the weekend against Tulane at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Pair of the Week – Veronica Corcoran – Senior – Closter, N.J. / Lucie Pokorna – Freshman – Kladno, Czech Republic
Corcoran and Pokorna improved to 5-1 on the year with three-consecutive victories at the top flight after dropping their opening match to No. 14 FIU, despite pushing their opponents to three sets (21-16, 18-21, 8-15). Corcoran and Pokorna won in straight sets against their San Diego City (21-11, 21-14) and Florida Memorial (21-15, 21-15) foes.

With the Privateers knotted at 2-2 against Missouri State, the duo bounced back from an opening-set defeat, claiming the final two sets 21-16 and 15-8 to seal the team win.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
