UNO pair take Southland Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week honors

Austin Vos and Ank Vullings

FRISCO, Texas – New Orleans’ Austin Vos and Ank Vullings are the Southland Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. Weekly awards are presented by Hercules Tires.

Vos went 4-2 on the week and helped the Privateers to a commanding 6-1 victory against Abilene Christian on Thursday to start Southland play. UNO split against its non-conference opponents with a 4-2 loss to Illinois State on Tuesday and a 6-1 victory over St. Mary’s (TX) on Saturday. The Privateers (3-2, 1-0 SLC) face North Dakota at 10 a.m. CT Wednesday before taking on Alcorn State at noon Saturday.

Earning back-to-back women’s tennis weekly honors, Vullings extended her singles winning streak to 20 matches and went 3-1 on the week as UNO remained undefeated in league play. The Privateers edged Abilene Christian 4-3 Friday and defeated UIW 6-1 on Sunday. UNO (4-1, 4-0 SLC) hosts Omaha at 2 p.m. Wednesday before visiting Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Sunday, respectively.

Men’s Tennis Player of the Week – Austin Vos, New Orleans – Junior – Perth, Australia
Following a three-set loss to Illinois State’s Nam Pham (4-6, 6-3, 2-6), Vos responded with a pair of straight-set victories over Abilene Christian’s Savan Chhabra (6-4, 7-5) and St. Mary’s Brendan Brown (6-3, 6-3) to level out his record at No. 1 singles to 2-2 this spring.

He and doubles partner Espen Lagarde improved to 3-1 at top-line doubles this season with a 6-1 win against Abilene Christian and a 6-4 triumph over St. Mary’s after dropping a 6-4 decision in the loss to Illinois State.

Women’s Tennis Player of the Week – Ank Vullings, New Orleans – Redshirt Sophomore – Roermond, Netherlands
Vullings extended her singles winning streak to 20 matches with a pair of straight-set wins over Southland foes at the No. 1 position. She took down Abilene Christian’s Nini Memishishi (6-3, 7-5) and UIW’s Alejandra Landaluce to push her singles record to 4-0 this spring.

Alongside Lea Alguacil at No. 2 doubles, the duo split against its conference opponents, dropping a tight 7-6 match to Abilene Christian before dominating their UIW counterparts 6-1. Vullings and Alguacil are 3-1 this season.
