Tulane Athletics to hold Hall of Fame Banquet at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium

Event to be hosted on the field and will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 19

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University Athletics will kickoff its Hall of Fame weekend on Friday, Oct. 19 with the department’s annual banquet where it will honor its 2018 inductees and tickets to the event are on sale now.

The Hall of Fame Induction ceremony tickets are $50 dollars and include appetizers, entrees and desert. Table sponsorships are also available by calling members of the Green Wave Club staff at (504) 865-5356.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour. The program will begin immediately after at 7 p.m. The ceremonial banquet will be held at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium and will be held on the field in honor of the 2005 Green Wave baseball, which will be honored in this year’s class.

“Voice of the Green Wave” Todd Graffagnini will serve as the program Master of Ceremonies for the induction ceremony.

The action continues on Saturday, as the Green Wave welcomes SMU to Yulman Stadium where the department will honor this year’s class. The game time for SMU has not been announced. Tickets for the game can by purchased by calling (504) 861-WAVE (9283).

Lynaris Elpheage, Football, 2000-02

• CNNSI.com and CollegeFootballNews.com All-America Second Teams, All-Conference USA Second Team, All C-USA Punt Returner;
• Led Tulane in interceptions all three years he played for the Green Wave
• Ranks second among Tulane’s career leaders for interceptions and first for passes broken up
• Ranked third all-time in team history for interceptions in a single season, fourth for interceptions return yards, first for passes broken up
• Ranks among TU’s career punt/kickoff returners in three categories, including 10th for punt returns, fourth for punt return yardage and third for punt return average and is 10th for kickoff returns, ninth for kickoff return yardage and third for kickoff return average.
• During the 2002 season, he had TDs on rushing, interception and both punt and kickoff returns and was the MVP of 2002 Hawaii Bowl

William (Bill) Goss, Football, 1963-65
• UPI and AP First Team All-SEC linebacker as a senior in 1965 and was the final Tulane player ever chosen All-SEC
• First Team SEC All-Academic in 1965
• Team captain, 1965; Started every game as a sophomore, junior and senior
• Led Tulane in tackles as a junior and senior
• Member of “Fighting 40” team that had just 40 players dressed out on the roster in a growing SEC
• Selected Tulane’s team MVP in 1965
• Played in Blue/Gray All-Star Game and started at linebacker in 1965
• Selected by Atlanta Falcons in eighth round of 1966 NFL Draft
• Became SEC football referee, officiating over 200 games in 23-year career
• Led Tulane with three interceptions in 1965

Jelena Jurlina, Track & Field, 2002-05
• Was a two-time Conference USA Champion in the javelin, winning the event in 2003 and 2004
• Earned All-Conference USA honors 12 times during her career
• Was all-conference during the outdoor season in the discus (2002, 2003, 2004), javelin (2002, 2003, 2004, 2006) and shot put (2003, 2004)
• An all-conference three times in the shot put during the indoor season (2005, 2004, 2003)
• Qualified for the 2004 NCAA National Meet in both the discus and javelin, placing ninth and 19th, respectively
• Qualified for the 2003 NCAA National Meet in the javelin, finishing 10th overall
• Named to the All-Louisiana squad in 2003 and 2004
• Holds the current school record in the discus, ranks third in the indoor shot put, fourth in the outdoor shot put, while sitting fifth on the school’s career charts in the javelin.

Ashley Langford, Women’s Basketball, 2005-09
• Helped Tulane produce 75 wins (75-47) and a .615 winning percentage in four-year span with four-straight winning seasons
• Helped Tulane to a 26-7 record and a Conference USA regular season championship and to a berth in the WNIT during her sophomore season
• Earned Freshman All-America honors from Basketball News Service – just 1 of 10 freshmen nationally to receive the honor
• Named Third Team All-Conference USA three times (2007, 2008, 2009)
• Named to the Conference USA All-Freshmen Team
• Named Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2008-09
• Named DoubleTree Classic Tournament MVP in 2006 and named to the event’s All-Tournament team in 2007 and 2008
• Named to Conference USA All-Academic Team in 2008-09
• Won Conference USA Spirit of Service Award as a senior
• Named All-Louisiana in 2007-08 and 2008-09
• Holds school record for minutes per game (34.4) while ranking second in games started (119) and minutes played (4,162)
• Tied for 24th on Tulane’s all-time scoring list with 1,047 career points
• Holds school record for assists (722) and assists per game (6.0)
• Is one of only two players in school history with 1,000+ career points and 500+ career assists
• Recorded the second- (207), fifth- (184), sixth- (171) and ninth-most (160) assists ever in a single season
• Twice set had 14 assists in a single game, then the school record
• Holds five of the top 10 spots for most assists in a single game
• Held a 2.19 assist-to-turnover ratio in her career
• Her 6.56 assist per game average in 2005-06 led all freshmen nationally and ranked fifth overall
• Fifth in career free throws made (380)
• Made 43 consecutive free throws, the eighth longest streak in NCAA history and longest in C-USA history
• Ranks third in career free throw percentage (.839) and holds the fourth- (.867) and fifth-best (.851) season free throw percentages at Tulane
• Ranks sixth in career steals (234) and eighth in career steals per game (1.9), and second-most steals in a single game (8)

Steve Riley, Baseball, 1981-84
• Named the Green Wave’s Outstanding Hitter in 1983 as a catcher
• Garnered All-Metro Conference honors and earned Tulane Baseball’s Scholastic Award in 1984
• Twenty-three years after the end of his collegiate career, he still holds several Tulane career records. He is currently first all-time with a .509 on-base percentage in 595 at-bats.
• He currently ranks second in walks (201) and 10th home runs (37)
• His 1982 on-base percentage ranks second all-time at Tulane (.521) and his 59 walks are sixth all-time at Tulane from 1983
• His 46 walks in 1981 led Tulane and his 59 walks in 1983 were a team-high
• Finished his Tulane career with a .348 batting average, 137 runs score, 207 hits, 37 homers, 156 RBI and 362 total bases
• Played on Tulane’s 1982 and 1983 teams that reached the NCAA Regionals and won the Metro Conference in 1982
• In 1984 he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 25th round

2005 Baseball Team
• Tied a school-record with 56 wins, appeared in second College World Series Appearance
• Conference USA Regular Season Champions and Conference USA Tournament Champions
• Entered Postseason Play as the National No. 1 Seed and spent all but three weeks of the season atop at least one major poll
• Four players drafted, including first-rounder Brian Bogusevic, third-rounders Micah Owings and Tommy Manzella and 12th-rounder Greg Dini
• Three All-America selections in Bogusevic, Owings, Manzella and one freshman All-America selection in Brad Emaus
• One Academic All-America selection in Tommy Manzella (2016 Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame inductee), making him just the second player in school history (James Jurries) to earn both athletic and academic All-America honors in the same season
• Rick Jones named National Coach of the Year by Baseball America, named Conference USA Coach of the Year and LSWA Coach of the Year
• Micah Owings named C-USA Player of the Year, while Brad Emaus named Conference USA Freshman of the Year

• Micah Owings was eighth in NCAA in slugging percentage (.733)
• Bogusevic (13) and Owings (12) were fourth and seventh, respectively, in NCAA in pitching victories
• Set team-season records for saves (22) and strikeouts (579)
• Second in school single-season history in games played (68), at-bats (2338), doubles (164), hit by pitch (71), innings pitched (602.0) and putouts (1806)
• Roster composed of 14 eventual draft picks or signees
• Six total players eventually played in MLB

Billy Slatten Award
Ken Berthelot, Broadcaster, 1985-2001

• Left a career at WVUE-TV to join Tulane Athletics in 1985 and spent 15 years as Voice of the Green Wave where he oversaw exponential growth and reach of Tulane’s broadcasts
• Managed the school’s radio network, coaches’ television and radio shows and ran the department’s speakers bureau and was a liaison to booster clubs
• Launched first-ever regular broadcast schedules for baseball and women’s basketball
• Was the play-by-play voice for Tulane’s 1998 unbeaten football season and all three NCAA men’s basketball teams (1992, 1993, 1995)
• Inducted into the class of 2007 St. Bernard Parish Athletics and Sports Hall of Fame
• Honored three times as Best Play-by-Play by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association and was the 2001 American Football Foundation’s Regional Lindsey Nelson Sportscaster of the Year
• Member of the Allstate Sugar Bowl’s Greater New Orleans Hall-of-Fame committee and is a motivational speaker for clubs and organizations
