Area Prep Basketball Report for Sunday, Jan. 7

WESTWEGO – Playing four games in three days, including two in one day is a tough task when facing tough opposition.

That was the challenge for Trinity, Kentucky and Louisiana power Peabody Saturday night.

Fighting through fatigue and leg weary feelings, Trinity found a way to get it done when needed.

Drae Vasser scored five points in overtime and Jayden Johnson made two key free throws as the Shamrocks outlasted the Warhorses 48-45 for the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Basketball National bracket championship.

After Peabody took a 45-44 lead on a basket by Isaiah Jones in overtime, Vasser drove baseline and scored with 29 seconds left to give Trinity a 46-45 lead.

The Warhorses had a chance to recapture the lead but Jones, who scored all four points in overtime, missed two free throws with 14.4 seconds remaining.

Johnson was fouled and made both free throws with 3.1 seconds remaining.

Justin Burns got off a contested shot as time expired which was not close and Trinity had the victory.

Trinity led 12-11 after one quarter and 23-22 at halftime as neither team could separate from the other. The game was tied 35-35 heading to the fourth quarter. Peabody scored the final four points in regulation to force the overtime period.

Vasser earned Most Valuable Player honors, finishing with 17 points, seven rebounds and two steals while Jayden Johnson had 12 points and seven rebounds. Alex Johnson finished with nine points and five rebounds before fouling out and Julis Edmonds had eight points and eight rebounds for the Shamrocks.

Burns led Peabody (17-3) with 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks while Jones had eight points. Jordan Matthews had eight points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two assists.
