METAIRIE – In the opening game of the annual Mike Robertson Memorial Tournament Thursday, a pair of strong teams and programs hooked up at Mike Miley Stadium.

John Curtis Christian won back-to-back state championships in 2017 and 2018 while St. Thomas More has reached the Division II semifinals the last three years. The Patriots have won nine state titles while the Cougars have won four, most recently in 2015.

Both teams figure to make deep runs in Division I and Division II, respectively in 2020, providing their seasons are allowed to continue soon.

The visiting Cougars took advantage of early opportunities and held off the Patriots 3-1.

The Cougars jumped on top with a run in the top of the first inning, Leadoff man Luke Acosta singled, advanced to second on a groundout, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake LaPrairie and it was 1-0.

The Patriots (6-2) tied it in the bottom of the second as Richard Woodruff and Michael O’Brien each singled before Reggie Bergeron delivered Orgeron with an RBI groundout to make it 1-1.

St. Thomas More answered with a run in the top of the third on a walk to Jack Stefanski, a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Josh Stevenson to make it 2-1.

The Cougars added to the lead in the top of the fourth inning on a triple by Landon Morrow, who then scored on a fielder’s choice grounder to short. The throw home was wide and Morrow beat the tag to make it 3-1.

John Curtis had a great chance in the bottom of the fifth inning as Joey Taylor walked and Michael Curtis reached on an error. Taylor was out trying to score on a delayed steal of home. Austin McCready walked but the Patriots lost another runner on the bases as courtesy runner Ronald Poole was caught in a rundown between third and home and tagged out to end the threat.

St. Thomas More (9-2) loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning but reliever Michael Curtis pitched out of the jam.

Collin Delcambre came on for the Cougars in the sixth inning and pitched two scoreless frames to get the save for Grant St. Cyr, who went five innings, allowing one run on four hits. St. Cyr walked four and fanned five.

McCready (2-1) took the loss, pitching five innings, allowing three runs on three hits. McCready walked two and struck out seven. Woodruff pitched the final inning for John Curtis.
