Who is the best quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft?

Don’t be fooled. It’s LSU’s Jayden Daniels.

Other quarterbacks may have the name recognition and the cumulative stats, but Daniels is the most complete quarterback. Period.

Of course, he won’t be the No. 1 pick. That will be USC’s Caleb Williams. He has been the conventional No. 1 pick in mock drafts since he won the Heisman Trophy his sophomore year, but he is not as good of a runner as Daniels. Daniels is every bit as good of a thrower as Williams. And there is a such thing as USC hype. (I can type this since I have been a USC fan since 1972).

Most mock drafts have North Carolina’s Drake Maye as the No. 2 pick, but he wasn’t great against good competition last year. Week in and week out the Southeastern Conference was better than the Atlantic Coast Conference. Edge Daniels. Daniels also is a better athlete.

Most mock drafts have Daniels going No. 3 to the New England Patriots. If so, this will make him the best QB to play for the Patriots since a certain GOAT with the No. 12 lined up for the team.

The thought of New England catching a break at QB so soon after Tom Brady left is not fair, but the Patriots would be fools to let Daniels slip by them if he is available at No. 3.

And just for the record, don’t think I am some guy who watched a couple of fancy throws at the LSU Pro Day and decided to make a bold decision on Daniels’ behalf.

Most of these pro days are dog and pony shows any way. And any fancy throws a QB makes in a pro day has to be couched by the reality that they won’t happen in a live game against defensive players with at least a pulse.

Top to bottom, Daniels has it. He has the intelligence, the arm strength, the mobility and the moxie. No other QB beats him in all four categories.

Here are some more “Sports Takes Sure To Be Wrong (Although We Know The Majority Of These Will Be Right)”.

God bless the Cleveland Browns, but their choosing Jameis Winston over Joe Flacco as their backup QB has more to do with Deshaun Watson’s fragile ego than quarterbacking ability. Flacco was great towards the end of last season. If he had stayed as Watson’s backup, Watson would be one bad quarter away from a fan revolt with people wanting Flacco to be the permanent starter this year. Granted, Winston could make that same revolt happen, but it’s less as likely. Cleveland has too much money invested in Watson to make him a head case with Flacco looming over his shoulder in training camp.

I can’t help but wonder if Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter is the fall guy in this gambling scandal. Either way, just for the sake of appearances, I think Ohtani will get some kind of suspension from Major League Baseball.

April is the second-best sports month of the year. Look at the events in April: NFL Draft April 25-27 in Detroit,
First week of MLB regular season (the season opener was Thursday), The Masters April 11-14, NCAA men’s basketball championship 4-8 in Glendale, Arizona, NCAA women’s basketball championship 4-7 in Cleveland, NBA Play-In Tournament April 16-19, and the NBA Playoffs April 20. The best sports month is September, but that’s just because of the NFL and college football.

This is a make-it or break-it year for the Yankees’s Giancarlo Stanton. I think Stanton is going to make it and have a great season. He is worthy of a late pickup in a fantasy baseball league.

I’ve said it before: Draymond Green is a fool. The Golden State Warriors would be better served to cut bait with him at the end of the year. Green is not worth the trouble.

The Houston Astros have a few players in search of new contracts next year, including former LSU star Alex Bregman. I think the Astros are going to be great this season.

And finally…

Didn’t you use to be the Oakland Athletics? You were a franchise worth watching in the early 1970’s before owner Charley Finley broke up the team and in the 1980’s with steroid poster boys Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire. Now you’re just a Triple-A team masquerading as a Major League team. Umph, umph, umph.
