HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team wrapped up spring practice with its 15th and final practice of the spring session Saturday morning at Strawberry Stadium.

Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo was pleased with his team’s energy throughout the spring and felt as though the five-week stretch provided a vital evaluation period for him and his staff.

“We have a better idea of who some guys are,” Scelfo commented. “When we get that many days with guys, they start to build a brand and it starts to be clearer where they fit within our program.”

Scelfo believes his team answered some of the questions he had heading into the spring on both sides of the ball.

“We went into spring with questions on the offensive line and during the spring we’ve seen guys establish themselves as players we can count on whether as starters of backups,” Scelfo said. “We saw a lot of improvement over the course of the spring at quarterback and I’m really happy with the growth at that position. Cade Collier emerged at tight end for us with a great spring.

“On the defensive side of the ball, we saw some young guys really step up,” Scelfo added. “We feel very good where we are depth-wise at linebacker and in the secondary after seeing what some of our young guys are capable of this spring.”

Heading into the spring, Scelfo discussed the important of developing leaders. While acknowledging that is still an ongoing process, he singled out two players on both sides of the ball for praise in that area.

“Jhy Orgeron has really done a good job leading us on the offensive line,” Scelfo commented. “We’ve also really been pleased with (running back) Harlan Dixon who has really provided a great example with his work ethic and level of production this spring.

“On defense, (defensive lineman) Kaleb Proctor and (defensive back) Ian Conerly-Goodly both had really good springs for us,” Scelfo continued. “Those two guys have both stepped up as vocal leaders and are leading by example with their effort and level of play.”

Scelfo stressed the importance of Southeastern making the most of its off time before fall camp opens.
“We have to focus on the fundamentals,” Scelfo commented. “We need our guys to be able to execute and that all starts with the reps dedicated to fundamentals. That could be anything from eye discipline to footwork and we’ll continue to focus on those aspects moving forward.”

The Lions will report to campus July 28 and open fall camp July 29. Southeastern opens the 2024 season at Tulane. The nonconference slate also includes visits to Southern Miss and Tarleton State, while Eastern Washington and two-time defending FCS national champion South Dakota State visit Hammond.

Southland Conference foes UIW, Northwestern State and Texas A&M-Commerce come to Strawberry Stadium this fall, while the Lions will travel to Nicholls, McNeese, HCU and Lamar in league play.
