HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team closed out its third week of fall practice preparations for the spring 2021 season on Friday morning at Strawberry Stadium.

Friday marked the eighth of 15 practices during the fall practice session, which has replaced the normal spring practice with the competition season being postponed until spring. The Lions will practice Mondays and Wednesdays at 3:40 p.m. and Fridays at 10:10 a.m. through Nov. 13.

Friday’s team portion of practice focused on late-game situations. Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo was pleased with the efforts on both sides of the ball.

“The energy and effort were lights out today,” Scelfo commented. “After we had Wednesday off (due to Hurricane Zeta), we came out here today with fresh legs and were really flying around on both sides of the ball. We were able to get some good work in focusing on different scenarios. We – both players and coaches – can learn from being in those type of situations.”

The Lion defense had plenty of highlight plays during team drills, as Blayne Delahoussaye, Justin Douglas and Donniel Ward-Magee each collected interceptions. SLU was also able to generate pressure, as Kam Johnson, Jaylen Armwood, Mike Mason, Gerald Henderson and Dominic Lamm all got through for sacks.

The Southeastern offense continued to make plays through the air during the final practice of the third week. Nick Kovacs, CJ Turner and Salan Weber each hauled in touchdown passes. Turner’s one-handed snag in the corner of the end zone was good for the day’s final score and the offensive highlight of the practice.

SLU is scheduled to open its six-game, conference-only spring schedule on Feb. 27 at Sam Houston State. The Lions host McNeese on March 6 at Strawberry Stadium to open their home slate.
