Archbishop Shaw wide receiver Mike Williams will head to Southeastern Louisiana University next year and made the news official at a signing event on his high school campus Thursday.

Williams, a four-year starter, played both offense and defense last season as the Eagles reached the Division II select quarterfinals.

He accounted for 644 yards and eight touchdowns on offense, averaging 17.8 yards each time he touched the football in earning all-district honors.

Williams was clocked at 4.48 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

“He’s the best kept secret in New Orleans,” Shaw coach Hank Tierney said, “and a great athlete with game-changing and explosive play ability. Only a torn ACL early in his junior year hindered his development. He ran a 4.48 one day after being released from a nine-month ACL rehab.

“Southeastern is getting a high character young man with tremendous athletic ability and a great work ethic.”

SLU coach Frank Scelfo also heaped praise on WIlliams when the Lions announced their early signing class.

“Mike can really take the top off the defense with his speed,” said Scelfo, who led Southeastern to a Southland Conference title and the second round of the FCS playoffs last season. “He’s got great hands and has great athleticism.”
