Softball: Willow School wins, mercy rule results dominate first day of softball playoffs

The opening day of the LHSAA prep softball playoffs did not produce much in the way of drama.

Of the 28 games played, more than half of the games, 15 total, did not go the distance, producing mercy rule results.

In Non-Select Division I, No. 9 Central edged No. 24 Covington 3-1.

In Non-Select Division II, No. 7 Lutcher drilled No. 26 Bastrop 15-0 in a game shortened to three innings.

The Bulldogs (22-9) advance to host No. 10 North Vermilion in the regional round as North Vermilion eliminated No. 23 Loranger 11-6. Makayla Husser had a double and three RBI for the Wolves while Mikayla Watts had a hit and two RBI.

In Select Division I, No. 15 Lafayette eliminated No. 18 Warren Easton 15-0 in a game shortened to two and a half innings by the mercy rule.

The Mighty Lions scored 10 runs in the first inning and five in the second.

Haylan Chapman homered and drove in three runs while Addison Aucoin had two hits and an RBI for Lafayette.

Calleigh Suir pitched a perfect game for three innings, retiring all nine hitters she faced, striking out seven Eagles.

In Select Division II, No. 9 The Willow School easily defeated No. 24 Douglass 15-0 in a game shortened to two and a half innings by the mercy rule.

The Lions (16-4) advance to play at No. 8 E.D. White Catholic in the regional round.

Two area schools open playoff action today.

In Select Division I, No. 17 Ben Franklin travels to northwest Louisiana to play at No. 16 Caddo Magnet at 10 a.m. while in Select Division II, No. 18 New Orleans Science & Math heads to southwest Louisiana to play at No. 15 Teurlings Catholic at 2:30 p.m.
