Softball: St. Martin’s take district win at Varnado, 23-5

Area Prep Softball Report for Thursday, Mar. 14

St. Martin’s Episcopal went on the road Wednesday and picked up its first win of the season, hammering Varnado 23-5 in a District 8-1A contest in a game shortened to three innings by the mercy rule.

The Saints put the game away in the first inning, scoring 13 runs, before Varnado scored twice in the bottom of the first. St. Martin’s added a run in the top of the second before Varnado scored twice in the bottom of the frame to make it 13-4. St. Martin’s scored nine times in the top of the third to make it 23-4. Varnado scored once in the bottom of the third but it was not enough to extend the game.

Alaina Pilgrim drove in three runs while Olivia Bath and Malorie Saucier each had two RBI for the Saints (1-3). Lauren Bone had two hits and an RBI while Sophie James and Katie Main each had an RBI for St. Martin’s.

Saucier picked up the win for the Saints, striking out seven

St. Martin’s returns to action Friday, hosting Grace King at 4 p.m. The Wildcats (2-3) lost their third straight after opening the season with two wins and will host Houma Christian in district play next Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
