Softball: St. Charles Catholic, Ponchatoula, Chapelle win Tuesday

Area Prep Softball Report for Wednesday, Feb. 21

St. Charles Catholic opened its season at home with a 9-3 win Tuesday over St. James.

The Comets had a balanced attack as five players produced two hits each, led by Rylee San Andres, who drove in four runs. Alyse Chauvin, Aliyah Manson and Riley Perrilloux each drove in a run with a pair of hits while Adrienne Arnett added a pair of hits.

Kamryn Cancienne was the winning pitcher, going four innings, allowing two hits and struck out four.

St. Charles Catholic will host East Ascension on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Wildcats (0-3) host Destrehan on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Ponchatoula won at Holden 11-0 in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

The Green Wave scored in each of the first four innings, putting up four runs in the first inning, one in the second, four in the third and two runs in the fourth inning.

Sydni Stanga starred at the plate and on the mound.

At the plate, Stanga had two hits, including a home run and five RBI to pace the Ponchatoula attack. On the mound, Stanga pitched a complete game two-hitter, issued no walks and struck out six.

Christina Curtis had two hits and drove in three runs and Grace Schwaibold had three hits and an RBI.

Ponchatoula (4-0) will face Calvary Baptist on Friday.

The Rockets (1-3) return to action at Mandeville today at 3:30 p.m.

In a thriller on the West Bank, Archbishop Chapelle edged Patrick Taylor 2-1 in eight innings.

In a great pitcher’s dual, the game was scoreless into the seventh inning when the Chipmunks broke through with an RBI double by Allie Domangue.

The Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh as Abby Christ tripled and Ashton Rogers drove her in to extend the game to extra innings.

Chapelle scored the winning run on a triple by Domangue in the top of the eighth inning.

Kayla Giardina went the distance for Chapelle, pitching a one-hitter. Giardina walked two and struck out 22.

Rogers pitched brilliantly as well, going the distance and allowing two runs (one earned), allowing three hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

Chapelle (3-1) will play at Lakeshore today at 5 p.m.

Patrick Taylor (0-1) will host Higgins today at 4 p.m.
