Softball: Riverdale wins with no hitter, Sumner stays unbeaten

Area Prep Softball Report for Saturday, March 5

Riverdale took care of Karr, winning 18-0 Friday in a game shortened to 4 ½ innings by the mercy rule.

It was the fourth straight win for the Lady Rebels.

Lindsey Johnson pitched a no-hitter, striking out four.

The offense was led by a trio who came up huge for Riverdale.

Kerrielle Brown was 4 for 4 with five RBI, Lawren Dibella went 4 for 4 with three RBI while Isabel Cox was 3 for 4 with three RBI.

Riverdale (4-3) will play at home Monday against Ben Franklin 4 p.m. while the Lady Cougars (0-5) will travel to Salmen Monday.

Jewel Sumner remained unbeaten, winning 9-3 at Hammond.

The Tornadoes scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Jewel Sumner cut the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the top of the fourth before the Cowgirls scored five runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead and added three runs in the sixth. Hammond scored its final run in the seventh inning.

Senior Alana Fussell picked up the win, going the distance. Fussell did not allow an earned run, yielding five hits. Fussell walked just one and struck out 17, using 109 pitches in a masterful performance. Fussell helped her own cause with two hits and two RBI.

Senior Leslie Werner was 4 for 4, including a pair of doubles with three RBI while senior Sara Fowler had three hits and four RBI. Sophomore Jordan Allen had two hits and an RBI as Sumner banged out 15 hits.

Jewel Sumner (6-0) returns to action Monday at Mount Hermon while Hammond (1-5) lost its fifth straight game and will play at St. Thomas Aquinas Monday.
