Prep Softball Playoff Report for Thursday, April 20

In Select Division I, No. 5 seed Archbishop Chapelle advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-0 victory over No. 12 Captain Shreve. The manin storyline of the contest streamed live by Crescent City Sports was the no-hitter tossed by Kayla Giardina.

Chapelle (26-5) will play at Pineville in the quarterfinals.

Top-seeded St. Thomas More easily defeated No. 17 Ben Franklin 17-0 in three innings.

No. 8 St. Joseph’s Academy ousted No. 9 Mount Carmel Academy 6-1.

On Tuesday, defending state champion and No. 3 seed John Curtis Christian bounced No. 14 John Ehret 15-0 in three innings. The Lady Patriots (25-8) will host No. 6 Alexandria at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Trojans beat No. 11 Riverdale 11-0 in five innings.

No. 7 Acadiana edged No. 10 Dominican 6-5.

In Select Division II, No. 8 E.D. White Catholic ended the season of No. 9 The Willow School 16-0 in four innings. The Cardinals (18-12) advance to the quarterfinals to play at No. 1 seed Buckeye, who knocked off Evangel Christian 15-0 in three innings.

No. 5 De La Salle is into the quarterfinals after an impressive 15-4 win over No. 14 St. Louis Catholic in five innings.

Senior leadoff hitter Ottiyana DeJean went 3 for 3 with a double and scored four runs to pace the Cavaliers offensively while senior pitcher Gabie Peri went the distance, allowing no earned runs on just two hits. Peri struck out four and aided her own cause with two hits.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this group of girls and the direction the program is headed,” De La Salle coach George Neumiller said. “We as coaches put a plan together to change the culture and the direction we want the program to go in and this group of girls bought in. We have a strong-minded group of senior leaders that are leaving their legacy at De La Salle. We have turned the corner in the right direction but the job is not done.”

The Cavaliers (16-6) advance to the quarterfinals to play at No. 4 David Thibodaux, who knocked off No. 13 Cabrini 9-0.

No. 6 Academy of Our Lady moved in the round of eight with a convincing 19-4 win over No. 11 Bunkie in a game shortened to four innings.

Bunkie scored two runs in the first inning but the Penguins tied it with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

The Penguins erupted for 11 runs in the second inning to break the game open. Aliyah Gonzales, Gracie Toladano, Sanaii Weber, Ryanna Lanier and Aliyah Woods drove in runs in the uprising. Toledano and Webber each had a two-run double while Gonzales homered in the inning.

Gonzales was the star, going 3 for 3 with five RBI.

Toladano picked up the win, allowing four runs on two hits with three walks and a strikeout.

Katelyn Madrigal took the loss for Bunkie.

Academy of Our Lady (18-13) advances to the quarterfinals Saturday to face No. 3 seed Archbishop Hannan at 4 p.m. at Coquille Park. The Hawks wiped out No. 14 Lafayette Christian 13-0 in four innings Tuesday.

No. 7 Haynes Academy handled No. 10 Kenner Discovery 11-1 in five innings.

Haynes took an early 4-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first and three in the second inning. The Swamp Owls plated a run in the top of the third to make it 7-1 but the Yellow Jackets finished it with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Hailey Peterson (13-8) went the distance to pick up the win, allowing a run on four hits while striking out three with no walks.

Melissa Lopera had three hits, including a home run, double and single, Aubrey Claverie had two hits, including a home run, Caroline Longo had two hits and Ava Heigle had a double to pace the 11-hit attack for Haynes.

Liza Biancato took the loss for Kenner Discovery.

The Yellow Jackets (14-11) advance to the quarterfinals to face No. 2 Vandebilt Catholic. The Terriers beat No. 15 Teurlings Catholic 7-3.

In Select Division III, No. 9 Holy Savior Menard eliminated No. 8 Country Day 14-0.

No. 5 Pope John Paul II bounced No. 12 Dunham 10-0 in a game shortened to six innings.

Scoreless into the bottom of the third inning, the Jaguars scored five runs and added three in the bottom of the fourth to lead 8-0. Pope John Paul II walked it off with two runs in the sixth inning.

Ashley Chighizola pitched a complete game shutout, scattering eight hits. Chighizola did not walk anyone and struck out two. Kayla Benedic had three hits, including a home run with six RBI while Kady Benedic had three hits. Hannah Potter was 3 for 3 with an RBI and Baleigh Tillison had two hits and an RBI for the Jaguars.

The Jaguars (19-8) will play at No. 4 Houma Christian Thursday at 4 p.m. The Warriors edged No. 13 Thomas Jefferson 1-0.

No. 3 St. Charles Catholic handled No. 14 Loyola Prep 11-0. The Comets (21-8) will host No. 6 D’Arbonne Woods Saturday at 3 p.m. in the round of eight. D’Arbonne Woods defeated No. 11 Northlake Christian 12-2 in six innings.

No. 7 Patrick Taylor advanced with an impressive 11-1 victory over No. 10 Parkview Baptist. The Tigers (19-3) will travel to No. 2 Notre Dame in the quarterfinals Saturday at 1 p.m. at Leger Park.

The Pioneers eliminated No. 15 Fisher 15-0 in four innings.

In Select Division IV, No. 2 Riverside Academy took care of business in an 16-1 win over No. 18 Delta Charter. The Rebels (18-9) advance to the quarterfinals to host No. 7 Sacred Heart at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Sacred Heart eliminated No. 10 Covenant Christian.

No. 8 Central Catholic doubled up No. 9 Ascension Catholic 8-4. The Eagles (18-8) advance to the quarterfinals to face No. 1 Catholic Pointe Coupee, a 10-0 winner over No. 16 Highland Baptist in five innings.

In the Non-Select Division I regional round, No. 1 St. Amant ended the season of No. 17 Ponchatoula 7-0. The Gators advance to the quarterfinals to face No. 8 Northshore.

The Lady Panthers advanced with a thrilling 1-0 victory over No. 9 Central.

Junior Jenna Samuel, an Appalachian State commit, made sure Northshore would advance. Samuel (16-4) was brilliant, pitching a one-hitter, an infield hit by losing pitcher Cailyn Heyl, and she struck out 16 while walking three Wildcats.

Northshore (25-6) scored its lone run in the bottom of the second inning. Reese Jobert singled, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

Heyl (16-5) pitched outstanding for Central in taking the loss. Heyl allowed just the one run on two hits. Heyl walked five and struck out seven. Kennedy Ordoyne had a single and a stolen base for Northshore.

No. 7 West Ouachita shut out No. 10 Fontainebleau 8-0.

In Non-Select Division II action, No. 8 Assumption advanced with a 6-1 victory over No. 9 Grant. The Mustangs (23-9) will play at No. 1 North DeSoto in the quarterfinals.

No. 10 North Vermilion edged No. 7 Lutcher 5-4 at Lutcher. North Vermilion will play at No. 2 Albany in the quarterfinals.

The Hornets edged No. 15 Belle Chasse 6-5.

In Non-Select Division III, No. 1 Sterlington beat No. 16 Pine 9-1.

No. 3 Doyle advanced with a 6-2 victory over No. 19 Jewel Sumner. The Tigers (21-11) advance to the quarterfinals to play at No. 11 Winnfield.

In Non-Select Division IV, top seed LaSalle blasted No. 17 South Plaquemines 17-0 in three innings.

No. 4 French Settlement handled No. 13 East Beauregard 12-0 in five innings. French Settlement (21-10) will host No. 5 DeQuincy at 5 p.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals.

In Non-Select Division V, No. 1 Holden easily dismissed No. 17 Summerfield 11-0 in four and a half innings.

Holden scored three runs in the bottom of the first, added a run in the second and exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Taylor Douglas pitched a perfect game, striking out seven in a brilliant performance. Douglas was outstanding at the plate as well with three hits, including a double with two RBI. Anna Hutchinson had two hits and two RBI, Kacey Briethaupt had two hits and two RBI, Emma Wilson had a hit and two RBI and Kamrynn Ouber had two hits and an RBI.

The Rockets (20-10) will play at No. 9 Choudrant in the quarterfinals.

No. 4 Converse defeated No. 20 Maurepas 15-0 in four innings.
