Softball: Haynes, Mandeville, Patrick Taylor take Tuesday wins

Haynes Academy continued its fine early season play, winning 15-4 at Belle Chasse.

The Yellow Jackets banged out 14 hits, led by a huge, memorable day for Melissa Lopera, who was a perfect 5 for 5 with two home runs, two doubles and a single while driving in six runs.

Abby St. Cyr added two hits and two RBI while Carolina Longo was 2 for 2 with an RBI for Haynes.

Delaney Walker picked up the win, going the distance. Walker (4-1) scattered nine hits, walked no one and struck out nine Cardinals.

Sam Hill took the loss for Belle Chasse, allowing 11 hits while recording five strikeouts. Hill was the hitting star for the Cardinals with a home run and a double. Kyla Harden and Leila Heller each added two hits for the Cardinals.

Haynes (5-1) will return to action Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Harahan Playground against De La Salle while Belle Chasse (1-7) lost its sixth straight game and will host Vandebilt Catholic Thursday at 5 p.m.

Mandeville blasted Cabrini 15-0 at home in a game shortened to four innings by the mercy rule.

Laura-Marie Ferrier and Kara Henry each pitched two innings for the Skippers with each recording two strikeouts. Ashlyn Holliday and Reina Keys paced the offensive attack as each had two hits and three RBI while Grace Richard had two hits and two RBI.

Makenna Borne took the loss for Cabrini.

Mandeville (6-7) plays at St. Amant Wednesday at 5 p.m. Cabrini (1-7) will host Haynes Academy Friday.

Patrick Taylor downed Kenner Discovery 6-4 in the District 11-3A opener for both teams.

Ashtyn Rogers got the win, striking out five Swamp Owls.

Kadence Cannon had three hits and two RBI while Jadon Russell drove in three runs. Alyvia Palmisano scored two runs for the Tigers.

Patrick Taylor (4-2) returns to district play against Thomas Jefferson Thursday at 5 p.m. The Swamp Owls (5-4-1) saw a four-game win streak end and will also return to district play Thursday, at Ursuline Academy at 4 p.m.
