Softball: Haynes handles East Ascension

Area Prep Softball Report for Wednesday, Feb. 23

Haynes Academy is off to a good start to the season.

The Yellow Jackets handled East Ascension 12-5 Tuesday.

Haynes jumped on top with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added three more in the third and five in the fourth to take a commanding 11-0 lead. After the Spartans scored five runs in the top of the fifth, the Yellow Jackets scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to complete the scoring.

Haynes banged out 16 hits.

Jamie Weindel went 4 for 4 while Hailey Peterson had two hits. Delaney Walker also had two hits, including a double while Aubrie Claverie had two hits, including a triple. Daela Claverie added two hits as well.

Walker was the winning pitcher, going 6 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits, striking out 10 to improve to 2-1.

Avery Wheat and Maycee Sonnier each had two hits for the Spartans while Alisha Brown was the losing pitcher, going the distance for East Ascension.

The Yellow Jackets (3-1) return to action Thursday against Chalmette at Mike Miley Playground at 5 p.m. East Ascension (2-2) will travel to French Settlement next Monday.
