Area Prep Softball Report for Wednesday, March 17

District 9-5A figures to be quite good with improved Archbishop Chapelle and Dominican is the most recent Division I state champion (2019). There was no title decided a year ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mount Carmel Academy is typically a force, having won a Division I state title in 2017.

So is John Curtis Christian.

The Lady Patriots, who lost in the title game to Dominican in 2019 and beat Dominican in 2018, are off and running in 2021.

John Curtis opened district play Tuesday with a 3-0 shutout of Mount Carmel in River Ridge.

The story was freshman Kai Goodman, who completely shut down the Cubs by hurling a one-hitter and striking out four in a brilliant performance in the circle. Goodman added an RBI single at the plate to aid her own cause.

Alyssa Ochoa gave the Lady Patriots the only run they would need on an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning before Goodman singled home a second run in the same frame. Madison Laiche completed the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Mia Pumila pitched well but took the loss for Mount Carmel, allowing nine hits while striking out four.

John Curtis Christian (12-2, 1-0) has won four straight games and will host Archbishop Chapelle Thursday at 5 p.m. while Mount Carmel (8-9, 0-1) will host Dominican at 5 p.m. at Muss Bertolino Playground Thursday.

Thomas Jefferson hammered Patrick Taylor 11-0 in District 11-3A action in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

The Jaguars scored a run in the top of the first inning before breaking it open with six runs in the second inning. Thomas Jefferson scored twice in the third and fourth innings before finishing it off with a run in the top of the fifth.

Eighth-grader Carson Heigle pitched a 3-hitter, walking just one and strikeout out five, using 71 pitches.

Senior Regina Fletcher was 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and four RBI. Sophomore Ochoa Carter had two hits, including a double and a single with two RBI. Heigle, Junior Aubrynn Arcement and freshman Caroline Burke each had two hits and an RBI for the Jaguars, who finished with 13 hits.

Thomas Jefferson (10-2, 3-0) has won six straight games. Thomas Jefferson will play at rival Haynes Academy Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in district action while the Tigers (6-4, 0-3) face De La Salle at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Hahnville won at Terrebonne 17-2 in District 7-5A action in a game shortened five innings by the mercy rule.

The Lady Tigers played long ball to post the victory as Kat Smith blasted three home runs in a gigantic performance while Lauren Crochet belted a grand slam.

The Lady Tigers (11-8, 4-0) have won seven straight games and will play in the Lutcher Tournament this weekend, opening Friday at 3 p.m. against Ascension Christian.

Terrebonne (9-8, 2-2) travel to East St. John Thursday at 4 p.m. in a district contest.
