Softball: Ben Franklin, McDonogh 35, Mount Carmel among winners Wednesday

Area Prep Softball Report for Thursday, March 14

In prep softball action Wednesday, Ben Franklin outscored McGehee 23-13 in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule, handing the Hawks their first loss.

The Falcons led 1-0 after one inning before the Hawks scored seven runs in the top of the second inning. Ben Franklin responded with five runs in the third to cut the deficit to 7-6 before taking the lead with four runs in the fourth to take a 10-7 lead. McGehee recaptured the lead with five runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead 12-10 but the Falcons scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and led 14-11. McGehee scored a run in the fifth to make it 15-13 before Ben Franklin ended it with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Sidney Davis had an incredible game, going 4-for-4 with a home run, double and 11 RBI while Maleah Leal had three hits, including a home run, double, single and three RBI. Cate Bilbe had three hits and three RBI. Leal went the distance to pick up the win.

Ben Franklin (2-5) will next face The Willow School Friday at 4 p.m. while McGehee (7-1) plays at Country Day today at 5 p.m.

McDonogh 35 won at Scotlandville 17-6.

The Roneagles trailed 2-1 after one inning before scoring five runs in the top of the third inning and four runs in the fourth to open up a 10-2 lead. After the Hornets scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, each team scored three runs in the fifth inning to make it 13-5. McDonogh 35 added a run in the sixth inning and completed the scoring with three runs in the seventh inning.

Faisah Chambers and Ro’lahn Scott each had two hits and three RBI to pace the Roneagles and Scott picked up the win.

McDonogh 35 (6-2) will play Higgins today at 4 p.m. while Scotlandville (1-2) plays at McKinley today at 4 p.m.

Mount Carmel Academy snapped a 4-game losing streak with a 9-5 win at Pope John Paul II in eight innings.

The Cubs broke the tie on an RBI single by Shelbi Alphonso before Emri Roussel added an RBI single. Traub doubled home two runs to complete the winning rally.

Chloe Krey picked up the win in relief, pitching 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts. Ella Babin absorbed the loss in relief for the Jaguars.

Traub had two hits and three RBI while Reuther had three hits for Mount Carmel. The Cubs stole five bases, including two by Alphonso.

Mount Carmel (10-4) returns to action next Tuesday at 5 p.m., squaring off with Archbishop Chapelle at Butch Duhe Playground in a District 9-5A contest you can watch live on CrescentCitySports.com.

Pope John Paul II (7-7) will open District 9-2A play next Tuesday at home against Northlake Christian at 4 p.m.
