Soccer: Jesuit and Shaw boys, Chapelle girls win Wednesday

Area Prep Soccer Report for Thursday, Jan. 5

The Lakefront was the site Wednesday for a matchup of traditional powers.

Jesuit came on strong in the second half to defeat Ben Franklin 2-0.

The match was scoreless at halftime before the Blue Jays gained the upper hand with Jack Kessels and Connor Darcy each scoring a goal in the second half.

Jesuit (8-1-1) won its fifth straight match. The Blue Jays, currently second in the Division I power ratings, return to action Friday against rival and Division II power Holy Cross.

In an excellent matchup, Archbishop Shaw and Pope John Paul II played on even terms much of the way before the Eagles got the best of the Jaguars in the second half to post a 2-1 victory in Slidell.

After a scoreless first half, a hand ball against the Jaguars resulted in Waldo Cordova converting the penalty kick to give Shaw a 1-0 lead. Amani Aurelien provided insurance with a goal on an assist from Monty Zelaya to make it 2-0. Pope John Paul II scored with 20 minutes remaining but could not get the equalizer.

Shaw (8-2-3) will host John Ehret Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Pope John Paul II (2-5-3) will entertain Chalmette on Friday at 5 p.m.

In girls action, Archbishop Chapelle edged Belle Chasse 1-0 in the District 7-II opener for both teams at Belle Chasse.

After a scoreless first half, freshman Allisson Suazo scored the winning goal in the second half.

Marissa Rinderle had three saves to post the shutout in goal.

The Chipmunks (8-5-1, 1-0) will next face Patrick Taylor Friday while the Cardinals (4-5-2, 0-1) will entertain St. Martin’s Episcopal next Monday.
