Soccer: Riverdale, Northlake Christian win to advance to quarterfinals
Prep Soccer Playoff Report for Friday, Feb. 9
Riverdale boys soccer is quite a story. The program had never reached the state quarterfinals in soccer.
That is no longer the case.
The No. 10 Rebels hit the road to bayou country and upset No. 7 South Terrebonne in convincing fashion by a 5-0 count Thursday.
Arandy Deleon led the attack with a pair of goals while Ian Casas, Jose Deleon and Ronald Torres each scored a goal for Riverdale.
Marvin Buendia has done a terrific job with the Rebels (15-3-2), who now advance to the quarterfinals Monday at 2 p.m. at No. 2 seed Teurlings Catholic.
It was a District 6-IV rematch and rematches are always tough. Alhough No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas was at home, the Falcons knew No. 10 Northlake Christian would be a very difficult challenge.
That challenge proved a bit too difficult as the Wolverines downed St. Thomas Aquinas 3-1 in the boys Division IV regional playoffs Thursday in Hammond.
Youth was served for the Wolverines.
Eighth-grader Layla Williams gave Northlake Christian a 1-0 halftime lead with a goal before the Falcons tied it. Freshman Lexi Anderson then scored twice to provide the margin of victory.
The Falcons defeated the Wolverines 4-3 on Jan. 11.
Northlake Christian ( 10-5-3) advances to the quarterfinals to play at No. 4 St. Charles Catholic Saturday at 1 p.m. The Comets shut out No. 13 Catholic of New Iberia 3-0 Wednesday. St. Thomas finished its season 11-8.
