Soccer Playoffs: Jesuit, Holy Cross, East Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Northlake, Newman, Dominican advance to quarterfinals
Prep Soccer Playoff Report for Wednesday, Feb. 11
It was another statement made Wednesday by Jesuit.
The unbeaten, second-seeded Blue Jays handled West Jefferson 6-0 at John Ryan Stadium in the Division I regional round.
The story for Jesuit was Trevor Reichman.
The senior recorded a hat trick, scoring the first three goals for the Blue Jays in a dominant performance.
Jesuit (18-0-3) advances to the quarterfinals to host No. 7 St. Amant, who edged Brother Martin 3-2 on Tuesday.
In Division II, top seed and 3-time defending state champion Holy Cross had no problem with No. 17 Ouachita Parish in an 8-0 home victory.
Carlos Castellanos put the first goal in the net just five minutes in before Edward Moreno scored to make it 2-0. Ryan Jeanfreau and Ethan Ward each added a goal to make it 4-0 by halftime.
Moreno and Castellanos each added a second goal in the second half before Ethan Carney finished it off with a goal.
Sinjin Mills had a pair of assists for the Tigers.
Holy Cross (23-4-2) advances to the quarterfinals to face the winner of today’s match pitting No. 9 Belle Chasse at No. 8 South Terrebonne.
Also in Division II, No. 4 Ben Franklin edged No. 13 Bonnabel 2-1.
In a tightly contested match, Austyn Millet scored on a header in stoppage time to avoid overtime.
The game was scoreless at halftime with all of the fireworks occurring in the second half.
Ben Franklin struck first on a goal by Alex Michael before Sebastian Ramos evened the contest with a goal for the Bruins, setting the stage for Millet’s heroics.
Ben Franklin (15-3-3) advances to the quarterfinals to take on the winner of today’s match featuring No. 12 Live Oak at #5 Neville. Bonnabel finished its season 7-5.
No. 10 East Jefferson made a long trip to Bossier and upset No. 7 Parkway.
The Warriors (5-6-4) advance to the quarterfinals to host No. 2 St. Thomas More at Joe Yenni Stadium. The Cougars shutout No. 15 Terrebonne 5-0.
In Division IV, No. 4 Northlake Christian edged No. 13 Country Day 2-1 in Covington.
Will Murphy decided the outcome, converting a penalty kick in the 79th minute for the Wolverines.
Northlake Christian scored first on a first half goal by Jackson McMurtry on an assist from Murphy. The Cajuns evened the score by halftime on a goal by Charlie Michaud, setting the stage for a nerve-wracking second half.
Northlake Christian (10-2-2) advances to the quarterfinals to host No. 5 Holy Savior Menard while the Cajuns end their season 7-6-1.
Also in Division IV, #8 Newman shutout No. 9 Calvary Baptist 5-0 at Lupin Field.
Senior captain Alex Friedlander had a huge evening, recording a hat trick with a pair of first half goals and a second half goal. Freshman Boyce Batten scored a first half goal for Newman while Sessions Hootsell completed the scoring with a late goal for the Greenies.
Newman (10-7-1) advances to the quarterfinals to face top seed Pope John Paul II in Slidell. The Jaguars blanked No. 16 Westminster Christian 7-0 on Tuesday.
In girls action, top seed Dominican eliminated Central Lafourche 8-0 to remain unbeaten.
Dominican scored three goals in the first half and finished off the Trojans with five goals in the second half.
Dominican has outscored its two playoff opponents 15-0.
Dominican (20-0-1) advances to face No. 9 St. Scholastica in the quarterfinals. The Doves edged No. 8 Dutchtown 3-2.
