Soccer Playoffs: Grace King, Belle Chasse, NOMMA, St. Thomas Aquinas, Northlake boys, eight area girls team advance

Five area boys teams and eight area girls sides advanced in with victories Friday in the opening round of the LHSAA prep soccer playoffs.

In boys Division I action, No. 18 Grace King went on the road and beat No. 15 Slidell 1-0. Elvin Moreno scored the lone goal in the 36th minute as the Fighting Irish avenged a 2-0 loss to the Tigers back on Nov. 23. Grace King (16-3) advances to the regional round to play at No. 2 Denham Springs, who had a first round bye. Slidell ended its season 13-6-3.

In Division II, No. 16 Belle Chasse and No. 17 Westgate played on even terms to a tie, taking the match to penalty kicks. In the PK phase, the Cardinals (10-7-4) won 4-2 to advance to the regional round to play at No 1 seed and two-time defending state champion Holy Cross.

In boys Division III action, No. 9 seed New Orleans Military and Maritime scored a goal in each half to blank No. 24 Morgan City 2-0. The Bulldogs advance to play in the regional round at No. 8 Bossier, who had a first round bye.

In Division IV, No. 11 St. Thomas Aquinas shutout No. 22 Westminster Christian 5-0 as junior David Castillo had a hat trick and senior Mason Thompson scored a pair of goals. The Falcons (6-9-3) advance to play at No. 6 Holy Savior Menard in regional play.

No. 15 Northlake Christian advanced, holding off No. 18 Calvary Baptist 2-1. The Wolverines (9-8-3) advance to play at No. 2 Catholic of New Iberia in the regional round.

Eight area girls teams advanced with opening round wins including Destrehan, Fontainebleau, St. Scholastica, Bonnabel, Lutcher, McGehee, Academy of the Sacred Heart and St. Charles Catholic.
