Prep Playoff Soccer Report for Sunday, Feb. 11

Visiting, lower-seeded teams in the LHSAA prep soccer playoffs at Laplace had their way Saturday.

The confidence level was there.

The impressive run continues for the Northlake Christian girls soccer team.

The 12th-seeded Wolverines had already gone on the road and knocked off No. 5 Episcopal of Acadiana in the regional round of the playoffs.

Saturday, Northlake Christian did it again, whipping fourth-seeded St. Charles Catholic 3-0 at Frank Monica Field at Thomas Dupuy Stadium in Laplace.

It was the second win for the Wolverines over the Comets this season. Northlake Christian had beaten the Comets 1-0 Jan. 23.

The match was scoreless at halftime before the Wolverines exploded for three goals in the second half.

Alice Tujague broke the ice with a goal to give Northlake Christian a 1-0 lead. Lexi Anderson provided separation with a goal to make it 2-0 before Rylie Kuyper finished it, scoring on a penalty kick to account for the final margin.

Kuyper had a clean sheet in goal.

Northlake Christian (11-5-3) advances to the semifinals for a second straight year. The Wolverines will take on the winner of Monday’s match pitting No. 8 Evangel Christian at No. 1 Episcopal, set for 6 p.m. in Baton Rouge.

Newman has won the most LHSAA girls state soccer titles with 12, the last coming in 2021, completing a run of winning five titles in six seasons.

The Comets finished 22-3-1.

In the second game of a doubleheader, the No. 5 seeded Newman boys left no doubt, easily handling No. 4 St. Charles Catholic 8-2.

Ryan Claverie stole the show, scoring four goals for the Greenies.

Newman jumped on the Comets early and took control, leading 4-1 at halftime. Junior Richard Paul put Newman on top 1-0 with an early goal before Claverie put in three of his four goals, the first giving Newman a 2-0 lead. Claude Remondet pulled St. Charles Catholic to within 2-1 with a goal before Claverie scored twice more.

George Villere, who had two assists, scored twice in the second half, Jack Hance scored once and Claverie put in his final goal. Aiden Paz scored the second goal for the Comets.

A dominant program, Newman (15-3-2) advances to the semifinals for a third straight year and the Greenies will take on the winner of No. 1 Holy Savior Menard and No. 8 Episcopal, who meet Tuesday. Newman lost 5-4 to eventual state champion Episcopal in the semifinals a year ago. It is the tenth semifinal appearance in the last 11 seasons for the Greenies, seeking an 11th LHSAA state title.

Newman, which has 10 state titles to its credit, tied for third most in Louisiana history, won the Division IV state championship in 2017, 2020 and in 2022. The Greenies also won the Division III title in 1993, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2010 and Newman has reached the finals six other times.

Falling in the quarterfinals for a second straight year, St. Charles Catholic finished its season 23-2-1.
