SLU Walks Off Bison, Wins Series

HAMMOND, La. – Pinch hitter Lakin Polk singled up the middle to drive in the winning run Sunday as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team scored three runs after two outs in the ninth to walk off North Dakota State, 11-10, at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, claiming the series victory.

Designated hitter Rhett Rosevear started the two-out rally, getting hit by a pitch for the third time in the game. Gray Rowlett and Bailyn Sorensen followed with a pair of singles, the latter driving in the Rosevear from second base.

With Dom Regira taking over at first as a pinch runner for Sorensen, Christian Garcia invoked a bit of luck. Garcia pulled a ground ball down the third-base line that would have been the final out of the game, except the ball hit the bag and caromed over the head of the third baseman and into the outfield for a game-tying RBI single.

Polk followed with the Lions’ fourth consecutive single, plating Regira from second to seal the win.

Southeastern (11-6) slowly built a lead over the first half of the ballgame, scoring single runs in the second and fourth innings. When NDSU (3-11) scored single runs in the fifth and seventh, the Lions answered both times with multiple runs as they built an 8-2 advantage heading into the eighth.

It was all wiped out as the Bison rallied for eight runs on a single hit, a grand slam by NDSU first baseman Carson Hake.

Will Kinzeler was sharp early, allowing one run in six innings of work. He scattered five hits and did not walk a batter, striking out four. He did not factor in the decision.

Larson Fabre (1-0) earned his first collegiate win. The redshirt freshman from Denham Springs, Louisiana tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out one. Joey Danielson (0-3) suffered the loss, a day after logging his first save of the season in the series opener. Danielson allowed three runs – all earned – on four hits in 0.2 innings of relief work.

Ryan Brome (3-for-5), Jake Haze (3-for-4), Shea Thomas (3-for-4), Garcia (2-for-5) and Rowlett (2-for-5) all turned in multi-hit performances at the plate as the Lions pounded out a season-high 17 hits in the contest.
