It is a matchup of last year’s district champion and perhaps the favorite to win District 6-5A this season when Ponchatoula hosts Slidell at 7 p.m. Thursday.

You can watch the game live on CrescentCitySports.com.

Ponchatoula went to the Class 5A state championship game a year ago. The Green Wave (3-3, 1-2) snapped a two-game losing streak, picking up their first district victory with a thrilling 36-35 victory at Mandeville last Friday night.

“We’re like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” Ponchatoula coach Trey Willie said. “We were able to run it pretty well last week. We have to do that consistently. Our defense is playing okay overall. We just have to limit big plays and to not allow big plays on special teams.”

Ponchatoula will have to step up its performance level to have a chance to down the Tigers.

“Slidell is very good on defense and they move the ball and score on offense,” Willie said. “Coach Scobel does a great job and they are disciplined and well coached. We have to protect the football and execute and avoid turnovers.”

Slidell (5-1, 3-0) has won five straight games.

The Tigers lost their season opener, 16-13 in overtime to Jesuit in a game seen live on CrescentCitySports.com.

Since then, Slidell has been rock solid, particularly on defense.

The Tigers have allowed just 72 points in six games.

Last week, Slidell downed Hammond 32-21.

“We are relying on our strength, which is our defense,” Slidell coach Malter Scobel said. “We have controlled the football on offense which has clearly helped. It has been a joint effort to win five straight.”

Scobel is concerned with the possibility of two different looks at quarterback for the Green Wave. Bishop Davis has done a nice job, particularly running the ball while Nolan Tribble, who led Ponchatoula to the title game a year ago, could return to that spot.

“Davis is really explosive,” Scobel said. “They have two tough running backs who come downhill and they have a big offensive line. They might get Tribble back so we have to prepare for two offenses. We have to make sure we do not give up big plays. Their defensive front is very good. We know it will be tough.”
