MARRERO – In what may have been the game of the year in the new Orleans area, Archbishop Shaw kept its win streak alive heading into the playoffs with a 57-50 win Friday night over Carencro at Joe Zimmerman Stadium.

The Eagles victory clinched a first-round bye and pushed their winning streak to eight.

Both defenses were shredded all evening as both offenses were masterful.

Tied 43-43, the Eagles scored twice in succession to separate themselves in the fourth quarter before the Bears scored late to fall by a touchdown.

Mason Wilson put Shaw on top immediately, signaling what kind of game it would be. Wilson raced 58 yards on the first play from scrimmage with 11:36 remaining in the first quarter.

Carencro answered right back as Chantz Babineaux rushed 17-yards for touchdown but missed the extra point and it was 7-6.

Wilson answered with a perfectly thrown deep pass to Gavin Richard for a 69-yard touchdown to increase the lead 14-6 with 6:41 left in the first quarter.

Babineaux then hit Cashmire Batiste on a 55-yard pass to set up a 1-yard touchdown by Batiste to cut the deficit to 14-13 with 4:34 to play in the first quarter.

Jasper Parker capped the next Eagles drive with a 3-yard rushing touchdown, his first of the night, as Shaw took a 21-13 lead with 9:04 left in the second quarter.

On the ensuing drive, Batiste once again hit paydirt, this time from seven yards out and he ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game up at 21-21.

After a Shaw fumble, the Bears capitalized on the turnver as Babineaux found a wide-open Batiste for a 15-yard touchdown reception and Carencro took a 29-21 lead after another successful 2-point conversion with 6:10 to go in the half.

Rontrae Carter came up big with a big sack on fourth down that gave Shaw the ball back with 20 seconds left in the first half at Carencro’s own 30-yard line.

Wilson hit Parker with a 29-yard reception that put the Eagles on the 1-yard line and Wilson did a fake spike and jumped over the line for a touchdown with four seconds remaining in the half.
Shaw went for a double reverse handoff that was passed to Wilson who caught the two-point conversion to tie the game up at 29-29 at halftime.

Carencro came out of the break and drove for the go-ahead score, a 21-yard touchdown by Batiste to give the Bears a 36-29 lead with 9:49 remaining in the third quarter.

Parker got the equalizer, breaking free on a 46-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game 36-36 with 7:47 remaining in the third quarter.

Batiste found the end zone again to give the lead back to Carencro with a 4-yard touchdown as Carencro took its final lead at 43-36 with 5:35 remaining in the third quarter.

Wilson tied it again for Shaw, keeping the ball on a read option and walked in for the 9-yard touchdown with 3:02 remaining in the third quarter to make it 43-43.

Then came the turning point.

Carencro was driving down the field, poised to re-take the lead. Then Kardell Allen might have had one of the biggest interceptions of the year, picking off Babineaux at the Shaw 10-yard line, to end the third quarter and gave the momentum to the Eagles.

The Eagles marched 90 yards to take the lead with Parker racing 38 yards for a score to give the Eagles a 50-43 lead with 8:35 remaining in the game.

The defense came up huge again as J’Quan Carter forced and recovered a fumble at Shaw’s 26-yard line with 5:12 remaining in the game.

That set up what proved to be the game-clinching score as Wilson capitalized on
the turnover with a 24-yard touchdown and it was 57-43 with 1:46 remaining in the game.

Babineaux found Austin Dyson with a 56-yard touchdown with 46 seconds left to make it 57-50 but Shaw recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.

“We executed great, we came in to score a lot of points,” Shaw coach Hank Tierney said. “We did great on offense and I think we punted one time against a really good team. We scored 57 points. I couldn’t be happier. We have been great, we have won eight in a row and have a bye next week. We hitting the playoffs rolling. I want to know who we play. We are going to be home a couple of weeks and we’re tough to be here, tough to beat. “I think what fueled us the most was our recognition of their offensive ability.”

Parker could not keep up with the dizzying numbers each team put up.

“First, we had to start by getting our offense opportunities because we know it’s going to be a shootout, so our offensive line practiced harder than they have worked all season and it showed,” Parker said. “With all the rushing yards, I lost count after the first quarter.”

Wilson expected the game to unfold the way it did.

“Like to continue with what Jasper said, we knew it was going to be a shootout so we just had to push ourselves on offense and the o-line made it easy for us to keep working,” Wilson said. “It started off rough, but eight wins in a row, can’t be mad at that.”

Both teams will likely have first-round playoff byes when the LHSAA officially unveils brackets on Sunday morning.
