NEW ORLEANS – It took a while but the first Catholic League victory tastes sweet for Archbishop Shaw.

Luke Pounds gave the Eagles a strong pitching performance and Pete Taylor delivered a big three-ruin triple to pace Shaw to a 7-4 victory Wednesday night over Archbishop Rummel at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium in a game heard live on WGSO 990 AM.

“It’s been a tough year, I just try not to get down, I try to help everybody get up,” Taylor said. “I have so much fun even if we do lose. I still love every second of it. I’m happy that we were able to string things together and get a win and I was able to come through. I saw the first pitch inside, I saw it was a mistake so I just barreled it up. My approach was if it was a fast ball, I was going to swing.”

The loss avenged an 8-3 loss to the Raiders Tuesday night at Winterscheidt Stadium as the two teams split the district series.

Payton Clement was 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored to pace a 12-hit attack for Shaw. Pitcher Luke Pounds and Jordan Lacava each had two hits and an RBI. It was a pleasant sight for Eagles head coach Kirk Bullinger.

“That was the most complete game we’ve played all year as a team, there’s no doubt about it,” Bullinger said. “Luke Pounds pounded the strike zone all night long and did a great job for us getting ahead and then we turned it over to the bullpen when his pitch count got a little high and we tried to play matchup. Fortunately, Patrick Leonard came in to get those two lefties at the end of the game.”

The Eagles (5-20, 1-4) pounced on Rummel starter Stephen Powers in the top of the first. Zac Delger singled and advanced to second on an error. Pounds doubled home Delger to make it 1-0 and Payton Clement followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0.

The Eagles expanded the lead in the top of the third on a leadoff walk to Ryan Taix, a one-out single by Clement and back-to-back RBI singles by Jordan Lacava and Devin Lansing to make it 4-0, chasing Powers from the game. Hayden Elwell took over on the mound for the Raiders.

Rummel (14-10, 3-5) awakened in the bottom of the fourth. Jake Fury tripled and Chandler Fields ripped an RBI double to center to make it 4-1. Tyler Cook drove in another run on a fielder’s choice to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Eagles answered with three runs in the top of the fifth on the base-clearing double by Taylor to open up a 7-2 lead.

The Raiders finally chased Pounds in the sixth inning. Shaw pitching issued three walks load the bases and UNO commit Evan Francioni singled home a run and an error scored another as Rummel cut the deficit to 7-4.

Rummel threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Fury singled and Fields doubled him to third. Patrick Leonard came on and fanned Lane LeBlanc and got Kade Rivera to ground out to end it.

“We simply did not pitch well enough to give us a chance to win,” said Rummel head coach Nick Monica. “We failed to execute pitches from start to finish. It is disappointing. I was pleased overall with the at-bats we had with a couple of exceptions. We have to be more consistent on the mound to win consistently.”

Pounds went five and a third innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out two to get the win. Powers took the loss, going just two and a third innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Cook pitched three shutout innings in relief, allowing two hits but one was the big double by Taylor. Fields was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored to pace the 10-hit attack for Rummel.

“This team’s way more capable of what we’ve been doing,” Taylor said. “Our record does not speak for what type of team we are. I feel like it’s going to start coming around, even though it’s late in the season.”

Rummel opens a two-game Catholic League series against Holy Cross Friday at 7 p.m. at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium in a game that you can listen to on WGSO, 990 AM and at WGSO.com. Shaw ventures out of district to Thibodaux to face Central Catholic Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Ray Didier Field on the campus of Nicholls.

“It’s a huge win for these guys in district,” Bullinger said. “This is not a veteran club. We’ve only got four seniors. We’ve got four freshmen on the team. Anybody that’s on the bench has got the opportunity to get in the game and be a contributor for us.”
