Pete Jenkins

Has this ever happened to you?

There is someone who you have thought about calling for a long time, but you didn’t. Then, when you finally called them, you realized that you should have called them earlier when the thought first hit your mind to call them in the first place.

LSU is going to feel that way about its call to bring back defensive line coach Pete Jenkins. If the Tigers had called Jenkins earlier, they might have found a way to get enough stops to beat Ole Miss and stay in contention for a national championship.

Now the only solace for LSU is that it is going to run the table on the rest of its schedule. (How is that for an early prediction?)

Let’s pick the “Saturday Seven” as part of some “Sports Takes Sure To Be Wrong (Although We Know The Majority Of These Will Be Right)”

No. 23 LSU 42, Auburn 24: Auburn just isn’t talented enough to hang with the LSU offense. This game should boost LSU QB Jayden Daniels’ chances of winning the Heisman.

Tulane 34, Memphis 31: This is a Friday night American Athletic Conference showdown worthy of whatever kind of ribs you can eat to watch this game on Beale Street. Memphis is playing at home, but Tulane will find a way to pull this off.

No. 7 Washington 27, No. 8 Oregon 24: I think Oregon is the most complete team in the PAC-12, but crazy things sometimes happen to ranked teams when they play in Husky Stadium. Trust me.

No. 21 Notre Dame 41, No. 10 USC 37: There is a reason why Notre Dame is an early favorite – USC can’t stop anybody. And where is the one place where defensive struggles always seem to big a huge factor? Road games.

No. 25 Miami 30, No. 12 North Carolina 23: This is the Upset Special. Miami’s meltdown at Georgia Tech last week seemed like the kind of late-game decision a coach would make when his mind is focused on eating at The Varsity after the game instead of thinking about the game during the game. North Carolina is good, but it has its share of holes. I think the Canes came out strong to redeem coach Mario Cristobal.

No. 2 Michigan 45, Indiana 20: What can I say? I need a gimme pick.

No. 11 Alabama 26, Arkansas 24: The Tide is playing better, and it’s fun to watch. But lost in Arkansas’ 2-4 record is the fact that they have played some ranked teams very tough. I’ll put Alabama on a minor upset alert, because this should be a close game. I just think this game is going to end up like Arkansas’ games against LSU and Ole Miss this season.
