Saints should try to follow Rams lead for a quarterback

Matt Stafford

The Los Angeles Rams are obviously a fan of buy now, pay later.

Their investment this year in quarterback Matthew Stafford in a trade sending off Jared Goff and a third round pick paid off in the spades on the final drive of Super Bowl XLVI.

With little or no running game nd the entire stadium knowing Stafford would attempt to throw the ball to wide receiver Cooper Kupp, the Rams quarterback drove his team 72 yards in 15 plays for the game-winning touchdown.

Talk about an investment.

To be fair, the Rams still owe the Detroit Lions first round picks in this year’s draft and next, but thanks to the Super Bowl victory, this year’s selection will be pick number 32.

Now that is value.

As the Rams celebrated, you only wonder if what the Saints saw will influence what they’re thinking at quarterback moving forward.

New Orleans has an outstanding defense, a quality offensive line and Alvin Kamara.

Certainly, it is a core that’s good enough to win big, maybe even another Super Bowl. Of course, that can only happen with the right quarterback behind center.

Do the Saints make every effort to trade for a veteran superstar? Do they look to the draft for their new starter? Or do they attempt to bring back free agent Jameis Winston, who was very solid before being felled for the season in game seven with a major knee injury?

Right now, the Saints have a young and veteran group that is quite talented.

Quite talented indeed.

The Saints won nine games despite having to use four different starting quarterbacks while having to also endure a rash of injuries and COVID issues.

Only an outbreak of positive cases that decimated the Saints roster for the Miami game likely kept New Orleans out of the playoffs.

If the Saints had beaten the Dolphins, their record for the season would have been 10-7, the identical regular season record of the AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals.

As for the future, would two first round picks be the right move to try and pry Russell Wilson out of Seattle?

I say yes, for sure.

Wilson is exactly what the Saints need. Elite and still young enough to give New Orleans several great years. He turns 34 in November.

Would Seattle trade him, much less to a team in the same conference?

Probably not.

But I would inquire.

The Rams sold out for Stafford. They also signed Odell Beckham, Jr. and traded for pass rush specialist Von Miller.

They said, “Hey, we are all in.”

Now they are Super Bowl champs.

Because on the final drive, the right guy was at quarterback.

Buy now, pay later, almost 12 months interest-free.
