For a while, it looked like it would be easy Saturday for Archbishop Rummel but the task quickly became hard.

When things got tough, the Raiders fought back and proved its toughness.

Gavin Kennedy singled home courtesy runner Dominic Mendieta with the winning run in walk-off fashion with two outs to give 13th-seeded Archbishop Rummel a 5-4 win over No. 4 seed Captain Shreve in Shreveport Saturday afternoon in 10 innings in the Division I Select regional round. Mendieta was running for Brady Schmidt, who had singled.

Rummel had jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings and it looked like the Raiders would coast to a sweep after whipping the Gators 10-0 Friday.

LSU commit Mikey Ryan walked, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Central Alabama commit Rhett Centanni to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead after one inning.

Rummel scored three runs in the bottom of the second on a single by Central Alabama commit Brock Bullinger with courtesy runner Ruben Ramirez stealing second. Ramirez advanced to third on an error and scored on balk to make it 2-0. Kennedy and Aiden Gernard walked and Tulane commit Giancarlo Arencibia, the hero of a perfect game Friday night, doubled home both and it was 4-0 and it looked like the Raiders were on their way.

Captain Shreve would not let that happen easily.

The scrappy Gators fought back with two runs in the top of the third on a walk to H. Willis, a single by Andrew Sharp, advancing Hunter Willis to third and an RBI groundout by Walker Wicklund. Christopher Peyton singled home Sharp to make it 4-2.

Captain Shreve continued the comeback with a run in the top of the sixth on a walk to Aron Gillum, a single by Rhyson Carroway and an RBI groundout by Christian Meiki to make it 4-3.

The Gators tied it in the top of the seventh on a single by Sharp, a single by Wicklund, a groundout by Peyton advancing the runners to second and third, a walk to Jorden Green to load the bases and a sacrifice fly by Gillum and it was 4-4, sending the game to extra innings.

Rummel loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but Gavin Nix fanned to end the threat.

Captain Shreve loaded the bases in the top of the 10th but Schmidt pitched around two errors, setting the stage for the game-winning run.

Bullinger started for Rummel, going six and a third innings, allowing four runs on nine hits. He walked four and struck out three.

Schmidt came on, got out of a jam and pitched three and two-third shutout innings, allowing one hit with a walk and two strikeouts to get the win.

“It was cold and a bit windy,” Rummel coach Frank Cazeaux said. “We had to overcome the conditions and had to overcome their momentum. Schmidt did a really good job of keeping them at bay and we were able to get the run we needed. It was great to get out of here with a series win.”

John Chance took the loss in relief, going three and a third innings, allowing a run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Jackson Bleich started and was only able to pitch one inning, allowing four runs (three earned) on one hit. He walked three and struck out one. Carroway came on and was terrific, pitching five and a third scoreless innings, allowing four hits, with one walk and five strikeouts. Peyton and Wicklund each had two hits and an RBI. Sharp had three hits, scored two runs and had an RBI.

The Raiders (23-14) have now won six straight games and advance to the quarterfinals to travel to the winner of No. 5 Northwood and No. 12 Tioga.
