METAIRIE – Scott Thompson was an outstanding head coach at Brother Martin, leading the Crusaders to a state championship in 2010.

Since becoming the head coach at Archbishop Rummel in 2018, Thompson had not beaten his former team.

In fact, Brother Martin had beaten Rummel 13 straight times and 33 of 34 times since 2007.

Those streaks are over.

The Raiders took the fight to the taller Crusaders, leading from start to finish in a 52-44 victory Tuesday night at Jim Robarts Court.

The game was in stark contrast to the first meeting on Jan. 13 at Brother Martin when the Crusaders smothered the Raiders 54-36.

“They’re all huge, they’re all big,” Thompson said. “We knew we needed an extraordinary effort to just be able to compete with a team of that caliber, that level of talent, that well coached. Our game plan was to operate as a team and to make them take tough shots. I thought our ball movement was excellent. I thought we did a good job with their size and got great minutes from guys off our bench.”

Rummel went on an 8-0 in the first quarter which propelled the Raiders to a 12-3 lead before Brother Martin closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to cut Rummel’s lead to 12-8 by the end of the quarter. Each team had seven turnovers in the quarter.

Rummel maintained its edge in the second quarter, building a seven-point lead before settling for a 25-19 lead at halftime in a half where the Raiders never trailed.

The Raiders continued to impress in the third quarter, going on a pair of 6-0 runs to take a 39-26 lead by the end of the quarter. Chance Joseph hit a pair of 3-pointers to close the period.

Rummel led 47-36 with 1:17 to play before Brother Martin made a run to cut the deficit to 48-44 with under a minute to play but Rummel made four free throws to put the game away.

Kendrick Joseph led Rummel with 12 points, four assists and two steals.

“I think we just brought more energy this time,” Joseph said. “Last time, we were sloppy. We just brought more energy. We were just lit the whole time. Our defense is the best thing we have. We have to carry that every game. It’s a big win. We have many more to come.”

Darrius Davis finished with eight points, seven rebounds and four steals ad Ja’Mard Jones had eight points and five rebounds for the Raiders.

Eli Pichon topped Brother Martin with 13 points while Troy Santa Marina had 10 points.

“I’m proud of our guys and our effort,” Thompson said. “I thought our defense was outstanding all night. We are still a young team. I love the energy we are playing with. I thought our effort forced things to go our way. It’s nice to get a win against them.”

Both teams return to district play Friday night.

The Raiders (19-9, 5-4) will play league-leading St. Augustine at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Academy. The Crusaders (19-11, 4-6) travel to Jesuit for a 7 p.m. contest.
