PONCHATOULA – The beat goes on for the Slidell Tigers.

The Tigers turned a fortuitous bounce into a halftime lead and carried that momentum into the second half en route to their sixth straight victory, a 37-20 decision over Ponchatoula Thursday night.

The game was streamed live by Crescent City Sports.

In the waning moments of the first half, Slidell (6-1, 4-0) trailed 13-8 and faced a fourth-and-goal from the 5-yard line when Luke Guidry’s pass was tipped by a Ponchatoula defender into the hands of Colin Williams for a touchdown with 17 seconds left in the half.

Guidry’s pass to Austin Bates for the two-point conversion gave the Tigers a 16-13 lead at halftime.

“It was big,” said Slidell coach Malter Scobel of the score before the half. “Our offense won the game tonight. This is the best performance we’ve had by far.”

In the third quarter, Slidell turned an interception into an 8-yard touchdown pass from Guidry to Jahyde Williams, and Kendall Carter scored his second and third touchdowns of the night in the final quarter to put the game away.

Guidry passed for 263 yards and a pair of scores, with Williams catching nine passes for 155 yards and a TD. Carter finished with 80 yards on the grounds as Slidell had 379 total yards.

Ponchatoula (3-4, 1-3) led 7-0 after an interception set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Nolan Tribble midway through the first quarter. Carter’s first TD and a two-point conversion off the swinging gate gave Slidell an 8-7 lead with 8:21 left in the second quarter, but that was short-lived as a 14-yard burst by Andrew Cangelosi put the Green Wave back ahead 13-8 with 5:54 to play in the half.

Ponchatoula’s other score came on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Tribble to CJ Braziel in the final quarter.

Up next for Slidell is a first-place showdown in District 6-5A next Friday against Covington.

“We’re going to prepare like every week,” Scobel said. “Every week, we’re 0-0 and trying to win one game.”
