NEW ORLEANS – During the regular season, Archbishop Rummel junior first baseman Rhett Centanni belted six home runs as one of the most dangerous power hitters in the Catholic League.

In the Crescent City Sports Prep Summer League opener Tuesday night at Tiger Park, Centanni got a third of the way to that total.

Centanni belted a pair of two run homers, singled and added an RBI on a fielder’s choice in a superb display of power as Rummel-based Malcolm Dienes hammered Holy Cross-based Ponstein’s 10-1 in a game seen live at CrescentCitySports.com.

Malcolm Dienes got all the runs needed in the top of the first, scoring four times on a walk to Evan Burg, a two-run homer by Centanni, a wild pitch which scored a third run and an RBI double off the fence in left field by Casey Avrard.

The lead grew to 5-0 in the top of the second inning on a single by Lenny Cline, a walk to Burg, a single by Mikey Ryan and an RBI fielder’s choice rounder off the bat of Centanni.

Ponstein’s got its only run in the bottom of the second on a walk to Will Andrade before Pierce Broadnax was hit by a pitch. Andrade then scored on an error to make it 5-1.

Malcolm Dienes added three runs in the fourth inning on a walk to Ryan and a mammoth two-run homer by Centanni way over the 25-foot blue monster in left field to make it 7-1 before Anthony Mouney singled home another run and it was 8-1.

The Rummel-based squad finished the scoring in the fifth inning, scoring on a bases loaded walk to Avrard and an RBI single by Ruben Ramirez.

The game was called after the top of the seventh inning when heavy rains inundated the ballpark.

Starter Brady Schmidt went three innings, allowing one run on one hit, pitching around four walks and a hit batter to get the win. Mason Scholl pitched two shutout innings and Coleman Capaci added a scoreless frame for Malcolm Dienes.

Ponstein’s used six pitchers, with starter Ross Klein taking the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on a pair of hits with two walks. Tyler Clark, Coke Killian, Jake Gegenheimer, Jay Distler and Andrade. Ponstein’s pitchers walked 11 batters and uncorked five wild pitches.
