Defeating a team twice in a season is a difficult task. It is more difficult to defeat a rival three times in a season.

Karr has accomplished both feats.

In the Select Division I regional playoffs, the fifth-seeded Cougars held off No. 12 St. Augustine 45-39 before a standing room only crowd at Karr in a game streamed live Wednesday evening at CrescentCitySports.com.

The District 9-5A champion Cougars had beaten St. Augustine 47-38 and 40-36 in district play.

It looked like Karr would handle St. Augustine rather easily for a while.

The Cougars took a 13-7 lead after one quarter and expanded the lead to 30-14 by halftime.

The Purple Knights would not go quietly into the night.

St. Augustine cut the deficit to 37-30 by the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Purple Knights pulled within a point at 37-36 but could never catch the Cougars, who closed the game on an 8-3 run to win it.

Tyrone Wilson topped Karr with 12 points while Jyren Brooks and Keith Jones each scored nine points and Jelthroe Moses added eight points. Cy Merritt led St. Augustine (21-13) with 14 points while Donny Johnson added seven points.

Karr (25-10) advances to the quarterfinals to play at No. 4 Pineville, who edged No. 5 St. Paul’s 65-61.
