The three-start recruit from Hillsboro High School in Nashville, Tennessee considered offers from South Carolina, Indiana, Kansas, Coastal Carolina and Toledo. He becomes the seventh pledge for the Green Wave’s 2021 recruiting class.
The 6-foot-1, 175 pounder only started playing football as a junior last season. Previously, he concentrated on the basketball court. An instant success on the gridiron, Phillips tallied seven interceptions in 2019.
Possessing 4.45 speed and long arms, Phillips is quite capable of playing man coverage. He carries a little swagger and appears to have a good, natural feel for the game. Phillips has just scratched the surface of his potential.
There are five universities who have produced at least NFL cornerbacks since 2015 – LSU, Ohio State, Auburn, Florida and Tulane. That was a factor for Phillips.
