DWayne Winfield

The Lutcher Bulldogs have a history a great athletes who have lined up at quarterback. Terrence Jones, Blaine Gautier, Jontre’ Kirklin and Gavin Webster are part of a special tradition.

The latest in that line is senior D’Wanye “Lunch” Winfield, who was tabbed the best offensive player in the metro area after accounting for 4,657 yards and 70 total touchdowns.

Winfield fielded offers from UCF, Grambling, Virginia, Louisville and Nicholls, but when the offer from Lafayette arrived recently, all the pieces seemed to fit.

As a result, he started his 2023 with a commitment to the Ragin’ Cajuns.

Perhaps his season highlight was his 45 carries for 331 yards and 5 touchdowns in the state semifinal matchup against West Feliciana. The Bulldogs captured the school’s ninth state title the following week in the Superdome.

The 6-3, 207-pound Winfield had been considered as an “athlete” by many observers, but it was clear that he could be effective as a passer. Teammates gravitated to him when the game was on the line.

“He’s the complete package,” stated Lutcher head football coach Dwain Jenkins. “He leads us in the classroom and in the locker room. He is the best I have ever coached.” Winfield holds a 3.25 GPA.

Although similar in both size and skills to Terrence Jones, who excelled at
quarterback for Tulane in the mid-1980’s, Winfield will follow the path of former Lutcher star Blaine Gautier who signed with the Cajuns in 2008 and set numerous passing records while in Lafayette.

Just last week I was glancing at the metro area players who have yet to commit or sign with a school. I saw Winfield’s name sitting there, thinking to myself that someone is going to get a major bargain. He looks to be someone who may have been overlooked for whatever reason and now will have a chance to prove all doubters wrong.
