Since de-committing from LSU on July 30, Ponchatoula star safety Jacoby Mathews has been hounded by anyone he has come in contact with about his future intentions.

Contrary to some public perception, Mathews is still strongly considering LSU while the school he visited which prompted the de-commitment, Texas A&M, is strongly under consideration as well.

Mathews detailed those favorites and just where he stands in the recruiting process today at the scrimmage he participated in as Ponchatoula visited Archbishop Rummel Wednesday at Mike Miley Stadium in Metairie.

“Right now, I’m just going to stick it out and wait until signing day so that I can focus on my last year here,” Mathews said. “I want the ring just as bad as Coach Hank (Tierney) does and everybody else does in the city. We feel like we would let the city down if we don’t get it so I feel like my main focus should be right here with the team right now.”

Mathews professed strong feelings toward LSU.

“LSU, it’s just love all over,” Mathews said. “Ever since the de-commitment, we still never lost contact. We hit each other the same, call each other up the same.”

Mathews then gushed about the Aggies.

“A&M, it’s just a great program,” Mathews said. “It’s hard to run away from Coach Jimbo (Fisher), he’s a great coach, his success as a coach. Another thing that turned my head was going up there and seeing a nice campus, getting to watch how I would get used, getting under Coach (Mike) Elko, watching him show me Jessie Bates clips and all these other great safeties he coached.”

Mathews went on about his attachment to A&M.

“Watching the defense last year is what really made me realize like these guys have a run in my recruiting,” Mathews said. “I feel like A&M has something special building up.”

While LSU and Texas A&M are the clear favorites, Mathews has not ruled out four others seeking his services.

“Those are the two leaders but Florida State has stepped back in, Texas, Alabama and Florida, they all stepped back in so I feel like signing day, we’ll see where it takes me.”
