The LSU Tigers gained a big commitment when four-star cornerback Laterrance Welch from Acadiana High School pledged to the Purple and Gold, becoming the 8th verbal for the 2022 class.

The 6-foot-1, 180 pounder considered offers from Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Florida State, Nebraska, Tulane, Georgia, GA Tech, Miami, Michigan State, Minnesota, Texas, Texas A&M, Virginia, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Oklahoma. Corey Raymond and Kevin Faulk collaborated on Welch’s recruitment for LSU.

Nationally, Welsh is the eighth overall ranked player and 21th best corner nationally in the class according to 247 Sports.

His offer from LSU came just a couple of weeks ago. The DBU-themed history of the program and close proximity to his home played key roles in his decision.

Welsh has played both receiver and cornerback, but his future lies on the defensive side of the ball. He has great length, discipline and burst. Welsh is a good tackler in space who also can turn and run with receivers flawlessly. His excellent ball skills make him a player made for a championship program.

Showing he excels with the game on the line, Welsh clinched a state title for his team to cap this past season. Acadiana was holding onto a one-point advantage, 35-34, over Alexandria with one minute remaining. A two-point conversion play which was intercepted by Welch gave the Wreckin’ Rams a second consecutive state title.

Welsh overcame great challenges to be able to play in the ’20 campaign. After suffering a torn meniscus last May, he worked tirelessly to rehab before he was finally cleared to play in December. He holds a 3.0 GPA and participates in both basketball and track at Acadiana.
