Pro Bowl has lost its luster

Is it even relevant anymore?

The Pro Bowl is such a farce of a game that it has become inconsequential and even unwatchable for even the most ardent football fan.

I readily admit that I do not watch the “game” in its entirety, if at all.

The players simply aren’t playing football most of the way. The format changes and venue changes are a prime example of what is wrong with the game.

It remains a nice honor to be voted into the game, despite the flaws in the process which surround fan voting.

Five New Orleans Saints were selected to participate in the game, including Drew Brees, Terron Armstead, Michael Thomas and Cameron Jordan as starters and Max Unger as a reserve.

Brees, Thomas and Jordan were easy choices. They have enjoyed spectacular seasons. Unger has been solid, is a veteran and is respected by his peers. Armstead is certainly worth questioning.

For those looking at Saints who were perhaps spurned, here are the particulars.

Wil Lutz has made 25 consecutive field goals. Aldrick Rosas of the Giants, who was chosen as the kicker, is 28-of-29 on field goal attempts and has converted 25-of-26 extra-points. Will Lutz is 26-of-27 on field goals and has converted 27-of-28 extra points. It is a virtually even resume.

Demario Davis has been terrific, as has Sheldon Rankins.

Alvin Kamara was a legitimate candidate but keep in mind that Christian McCaffrey has had perhaps an even better season and he was left off as well.

Ryan Ramczyk is one of the highest graded, highest rated tackles in the NFL and is clearly deserving but he is a second-year player who is not known particularly well.

The fact that Armstead made the team is a testament to how others perceive his freakish athletic ability because he has once again missed a significant number of games, the last five, for the Saints. Armstead has never played all 16 games in his six-year career, unfortunately. Last year, he played in just 10 games and in 2016, he played in just seven games. The Saints hope to get him back as early as this week.

Thomas Morstead has had another very good year but you cannot argue with Michael Dickson of Seattle. Dickson is averaging 48.9 yards per punt while Morstead is averaging 47 yards per punt.

The fact of the matter is that the New Orleans Saints may not be able to participate in the Pro Bowl, anyway. That is the plan. Win the NFC, go the Super Bowl and forget about a forgettable contest.
